This is a wonderful song to reinforce a Black child's self esteem. My usually inattentive Black first graders were spellbound as I sang the few lyrics I remembered. They asked me to sing it again and again, which is astonishing because I can't sing a lick. As a result of their interest,we will perform it on stage. However, "your soul's in tact" is misleading for it takes a knowledge of Jesus to be there. The music is beautifully haunting.I haven't heard other versions of the song. But love Nina's indescribable voice. You either love her voice or hate it.
