For what it's worth... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/15/09
I think another read is that Jeff himself has a crush on Anne Frank, and that's always the way I hear the songs on this album--that reading her diary touched him so deeply that he actually felt a kind of love for her, and the love songs are from him to her. (Note: "I wish I could save you in some kind of time machine...Will you remember me fifty years later...")
Regardless, it's a remarkable album, and this song is the centerpiece. I'll simply leave it up to the engineer and his reaction at the end of the song to sum it up: "Holy S---!"

From an interview with Mangum:
"While I was reading the book ["The Diary of Anne Frank"], she was completely alive to me. I pretty much knew what was going to happen. But that's the thing: you love people because you know their story. You have sympathy for people even when they do stupid things because you know where they're coming from, you understand where they're at in their head. So here I am as deep as you can go in someone's head, in some ways deeper than you can go with someone you know in the flesh. And then at the end, she gets disposed of like a piece of trash. I would go to bed every night and have dreams about having a time machine, having the ability to move through time and space freely, and save Anne Frank."
Peter Van Daan | Reviewer: SarahN | 12/17/08
I think to try to understand the entire album of The Aeroplane Over the Sea, you have to actually read the Diary of Anne Frank. I don't think you can really dissect this song line by line; I have a vague idea that this song is supposed to be Peter Van Daan speaking to Anne. Logically it doesn't make sense...Edith Frank didn't die in the same time or place as Anne, Peter didn't survive at all, but in an esoteric way it sounds like it's a tragic love song to Anne from Peter, who she loved.
a fine piece | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/29/08
i guess i'd call myslef, hmm, old-ish (?) at the very least, i'm out of "the loop" of the contemporary music scene. BUT. been listening -- on and off -- to this plaintive band for some time, and just have to chime in; "Oh Comely" is, without question, a fine piece of work. Like when one is deeply inspired/moved by a painting (or insert your creative passion of choice) without really knowing (or having to know) why, this is a piece that is "meaningful, magical" to say the very least.

One of the most beautiful songs by an amazing band.
By the way, the last segment (beginning with "Goldaline"), was part of an unreleased song of Jeff's called Goldaline, and is not related to the rest of the song.
Anne Frank | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/07
The whole CD was inspired by Anne Frank. Hence one of the song titles 'Holland 1945.' This song is no different, the lyrics are amazing, and the song is beautiful.
Anne | Reviewer: Hannah | 9/7/07
Well I know at least part of it is about Anne Frank, the part about burying her with others...
love and it's dark side? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/6/07
It's actually about a set of siamese twins freezing to death in the forest. "we will fold and freeze together." "feel for ourselves in some stranger's stomach." like a wolf's stomach after they've been eaten.
It's all in an interview with the lead singer.
