Another great song by NMH | Reviewer: Eliza | 1/26/13

WOW! Whenever i hear this song i just want to belt it out at the top of my lungs just like jeff does. The lyrics still make you think, but the song is a lot more upbeat than 'In the aeroplane over the sea' the song is very nice it just makes you want to jump and sing it, or even cry sometimes... that is why i love NMH making such great songs with meaning.

Wow | Reviewer: Felipe | 3/27/12

I discovered this song (and this album) just a few days ago. And listening to it is all I've done in these days, one time after another, hundreds of times. It's not just that I like this music. It's that it owns me.

Anne Frank | Reviewer: Dane | 5/15/11

Yeah you guys are right. It's loosely inspired by Anne Frank, by whom Magnum was fascinated. Though German, she hid out in the Netherlands with her family (the Annex was in Amsterdam), and was murdered within weeks of liberation of her camp. It's not really limited to her story, however, and references the Spanish Civil War, and the practice of placing bombs in pianos - which was a fairly common practice in the Nazi and Spanish fascist cases.

Entendre | Reviewer: Stephen | 3/6/11

I agree with the double entendre idea, however I feel that it is both the story of Anne Frank sided with, not unrequited love, but the loss of youthful innocence, through the singer's personal loss, and Anne Frank's.

This beautifully crafted song, is meant to leave a dent in your emotions. The song screams only pain, sorrow & love, but still brings joy & hope with the optimistic beat & voice of the singer...the song leaves you speechless with emotions...a true masterpiece.

Anne Frank | Reviewer: Adam | 4/20/10

For everyone asking/wondering, the entire album was written about Anne Frank. Jeff Mangum read her autobiography and fell in love with her through the book, to the point that it inspired to write this album.

From Holland | Reviewer: J Rizzo | 9/21/09

"At the bottom of everything" by Bright Eyes has a similar feeling. Mixing extremely sad lyrics with exciting and joyous music.

Funny enough, I live in Amsterdam, and I rode by the Anne Frank house today on my bike while this song was blasting on my iPod. Inspired me enough to google it and see what turned up. :)

i think | Reviewer: shawn maccoy | 4/25/09

i think the entire album is a double entendre: it is about both anne frank/the holocaust and also of love, either unrequited or lost.

in other words, the impetus and inspiration of the entire album was of lost love, and the death of an innocent beauty, anne frank, becomes the metaphor through which mangum expresses his profound sorrow...

or maybe i'm just projecting :)

is it just the first verse or the whole song about anne frank? wheather it makes you sad or happy, makes you want to dance or go to holland, this is one of the greatest songs, definentally on my list of top 5!

Favorite for sure | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/27/08

Yeah, I also love this song. It makes me happy, until I listen to the lyrics and i dunno... it just affects me.
I am pretty sure the entire album off of which this song is about Anne Frank/the holocaust (esp. aeroplane over the sea)

chemical swirls | Reviewer: alex | 9/21/08

this is my all time favourite song, and yes the first verse refers to anne frank. this song is so perfect to make you feel happy, sad, excited, and wanting ot kill yourself all at the same time, it IS a swirl of emotions.

Just an idea... | Reviewer: Matt | 8/15/08

First of all this is definitely one of my favorite songs; definitely in my top 10. An amazing flood of emotions all swirling amongst one another. I also think that the first verse is referring to Anne Frank...? She did pass away in 1945, but this is just an idea.

incredible!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/07

I totally agree with the one that says "makes me want dance, sing,be happy, and cry all at the same time. This is also my idea of the song.

Outstanding | Reviewer: Christine | 6/20/07

Holland gives me chills every time I listen to it. One of the most perfectly crafted and executed songs I've come across. Most definitely makes my top ten... perhaps top 5.
