This song is what music is about. It applies to every one that is going through a difficult moment. It doesn't.matter if you are a solder in iraq or a father working in another city it just shows we all miss our starlight
Meaning | Reviewer: Ricky | 8/2/09
Muse is sort of an emo/punkish band. As such, their lyrics and songs would typically reflect world events and government.
Looking at it that way, I always assumed the lyrics were about soldiers. They leave to cross the ocean, leaving behind their family members, friends, and lovers to a place where their life has no meaning. Starlight is probably something like going back in time to the days before they left. Seeing as how the light from the stars is actually millions of years old. "i just wanted to hold you in my arms." Think of someone lying in a trench in Iraq. All he can do is dream of what he should have done while looking up at the stars.

this song is what muse is about. it doesn't matter how long it takes for the sun's rays to travel; science has no hold on interpretation. the lyrics encapsulate every persons own individual views. it could be about anything at all, it doesn't matter. to each their own, but in this case to each and for all.

This is such a cool song. I heard it once and I was hooked. Also, I agree that this song doesn't have just one concrete meaning. It's great that one song can mean so many different things to different people.
Oh, just one more thing- Mike, the sun's rays take only 8 minutes to reach us. :)
I love this song.
hello. | Reviewer: Noelle | 6/16/09
I've known this song for a while. But, I never really analyzed the meaning of the song.
There is no need for all of you to debate what the meaning of the song is. To me, there really isn't a specific meaning. You can make whatever you want. But it's all in the same category. To me, it's really referring to one person that brightens your life. And you've been looking for that person(starlight) and finally you found that person. In this case, I think you are the "ship". That's what I think. Muse rocks my socks off, esp this song.
muse rocks. period. | Reviewer: tashmaniac | 3/31/09
nice interpretations..i never realized that this song could have tons of them because when i first heard of it, it reminded me of that someone whom i love..well i think that the ship is the life you have with your special someone and that starlight is that person because he/she illuminates your life and the part with black holes and revelations etc..hmm i think that means the things in the future which are very much uncertain because you'll never know where life could take you..the other words in the song..well i guess you guys can figure out what it means hehe
Deep Song, Many Meanings I think Its about a Goal or Ideal to strive for. | Reviewer: lonewolf | 2/10/09
Still my favourite song. It is one of those songs that can be interpreted in many ways. It could make you happy or sad. different days this song to me has different meanings It could be about a plane, a girlfriend (long distance maybe), love, and illuminati or NWO conspiracy or I really think metaphorically its a goal or ideal in life. It took me a while to figure this out.
Far away
This ship has taken me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die
-this is about the journey to the goal and sometimes our goals take us out of a comfort zone or away from people in our lives who aren't ready to change with you
Starlight
I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore
- Starlight is the goal its self.
My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive
- the feeling of this goal and pursuit of the goal. How its what drives this person
I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away
- I'll never let this goal go as long as it doesn't fade away
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
- Black holes are still virtually unknow objects in the universe. Sure we can see them but no one knows for sure whats in them.
- in life we have hopes and expectations and unknown things and things that we learn or are revealed
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms
- the goal itself
That's the great thing about a band like Muse is there are so many ways you can interpret this song. To each person on a different day it could mean so much more.
Words are nothing to describe what I'm feeling | Reviewer: Katrin | 2/10/09
It sounds stupid, but I see my life in this song. I want to see everything in this world, it'll always chasing me. So as many of us.
Sometimes I want to cry when I listen it, want to cry and smile.
I've said this hundreds times, but anyway: Muse is one of the greatest bands in the world
Muse: Up for interpretation | Reviewer: London Anon | 2/2/09
I like Ricardo's thinking and I concur. Muse's songs are all about metaphors; the difference being that the original thoughts behind the metaphors maybe somewhat different to those interpreted.
Literature, songs or anything of the sort are open for interpretation, but it boils down to how, on a personal level, you 'read' the music.
From my perspective, I agree with Shiva (though I have some subtle differences of my own).
All in all, Starlight, to me, is one of the best Muse songs. My take on it has got me through some rough patches.
I'm glad that regardless of how we read the metaphors (or not in Anon's case!) we all love the song.
P.S. LOL to mike and Anon - way more than 1! I know that you were saying it would take longer, but it would take more than the age of civilised world to reach the nearest star... :P
hoping too correct anonymous | Reviewer: mike | 1/24/09
Anonymous, get your facts straight - if you want to put in a science definition, at least get it straight.
Rays from the sun (our nearest star) take about what, 2 hours to reach us? so if our "theoretical" fastest ships could travel at 1/10 the speed of light, I doubt it would take a generation for us to travel to the sun :).
Regardless, this is a great song!
