this song wow's me. | Reviewer: Chris | 11/16/09
Brilliant song in every aspect. Muse is just to amazing. Timeless music.
As far as song meaning. I think it all pretty much gets summed up at the end.
"I've had recurring nightmares that I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity to be a better man"
Basically saying being loved unconditionally by someone can sort of limit ones perspective on life, and their own capabilities. Basically saying true love can hold you back, at the same time bringing true happiness.
Bloody Brilliant | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/9/09
I just think this song is perfectly brilliant it dosn't clear my top 5 muse songs, but it is so fantastic in its originality and i use it a s a constant motto for troubled relationships. But now im in a good one i use the song Invincible as a motto =) lol
Nice... | Reviewer: Monkey-Dave | 10/10/09
Excellent song IMO, BH&R is the best album they have done by miles, nothing touches it, and although this may not even be in the top 5 songs of that album, and it certainly isn't the best on the album, it's still amazing! GO MUSE!
Last line | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/21/09
I always took the last line as a statement that he should accept rough relationships (not necessarily romantic), because it teaches him about himself, and helps him improve.
I actually keep that on a sheet of paper, I take it everywhere and post it on a wall. When I have problems, it helps remind me that those times help me develop.
I'm not all that good at poetic interpretation, but... | Reviewer: Jake | 1/5/09
I'll put in my two cents.
"Come into my life
Regress into a dream
We will hide
And build a new reality"
--I believe this stanza or quatrain or whatever you wish to call it brings up the nature of the beginning of new relationships, especially ones that seem too good to be true (Perhaps a hero or savior from a previous bad relationship?). The "dream" possibly refers to how the nature of their relationship, or even of each other's characters are too good to be true, only found in dreams or stories. "Building a new reality" refers to the two building up their own life based on the dreamlike state of their relationship, having to change the ways they live to suit each other(?).
"Draw another picture
Of the life you could have had
Follow your instincts
And choose the other path"
--When the lines "Draw another picture of the life you could have had" come in, it implies that the relationship does not suit one or the other, perhaps the "dream" beings that they deceived themselves into believing about their significant others are fading away, and forcing them apart. Therefore, one chooses to forge a new path, to follow his or her heart or "instincts and choose the other path" (The other path meaning to leave the other).
"You should never be afraid
You're protected
From trouble and pain
Why
Why is this a crisis in your eyes again"
--The fear spoken of may hint towards the fear of a lasting relationship, fear that they may be hurt by the other (by a break up). The artist speaks as though he plans not to do so, however, claiming that the other is "protected from trouble and pain." When he asks "Why is this a crisis in your eyes again?", he is essentially asking why the other is so intent on leaving, so intent on breaking free of the dream, so intent on destroying their "reality".
"Come to be
How did it come to be
Tied to a railroad
No love to set us free"
--The artist questions how this seemingly perfect "reality" turned out to be only an illusion, how their seemingly true and undying love turned out to be a fragile bond of simple infatuation. "Tied to a railroad, no love to set us free" refers to the inevitability of the pain about to hit them like an oncoming train, unstoppable and unavoidable, all because the dream is gone, and any "love" felt between the pair gone.
"Watch our souls fade away
And our bodies crumbling
Don't be afraid
I will take the BLOW for you"
--The end of the reality they forged for themselves is upon them, their dreamed up souls and bodies crashing down beneath them to reveal them for their true selves, who were lost in the lie that they had brought about. When he states "don't be afraid, I will take the blow for you," he means simply that the end will be more painful to him than to the other, as he was the one who was truly lost in the illusion.
"I've had recurring nightmares
That I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity
To be a better man"
--The dream has dissolved, it has become a nightmare. And what remains is a man whose spirit has been broken. And, in a final moment of epiphany, he realizes that his fatal error was not living his own life, not evolving his own soul, not revealing his true self, rather he placed all those he was with on a pedestal and conformed to them. And because of this, he missed the chance to meet the one who he would not need to conform to, missed the one who would accept him for who he was.
Ah well, there's my input.
On another note, I REALLY love the piano that comes immediately after "Why is this a crisis in your eyes again?"

This is a very good song, in my opinion. I like Muse very much for their sound and lyrics, so I look forward to their next CD since they according to Wikipedia will produce it on their own to get more freedom. The point has, in any case, already been made that Matthew Bellamy is a music genius.
maybe its just me.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/19/08
its probably just me..but since i just lost the person i thought i could spend the rest of my life with this is how i view the song..
"Come into my life
Regress into a dream
We will hide
And build a new reality
Draw another picture
Of the life you could have had"
-everything is good its like a dream and picture this dream that can be ur lives together following the dreams path..
"Follow your instincts
And choose the other path
You should never be afraid
You're protected
From trouble and pain"
-but the love isnt true so choose a path that doesnt lead to that dream and u shouldnt really be afraid because ur protected by ur lack of true love and u wont be affected as much as me who feels the trouble and pain of losing my true love..
"Why
Why is this a crisis in your eyes again
Come to be
How did it come to be
Tied to a railroad
No love to set us free"
-why are u so worried, what are u fighting for? what did i do, what went wrong for our love to be tied to a rail road that a train will eventually and always break apart and theres not true emotiong on both sides of the rope to get out of the trains way...
"Watch our souls fade away
And our bodies crumbling
Don't be afraid
I will take the BLOW for you"
-the love i thought we once had will never be the same and never be true until the day we die but dont worry because im the only one whos going to feel the real pain of that train..
"I've had recurring nightmares
That I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity
To be a better man"
-im forever affected by knowing the incredible feeling of finding my soul mate who loves me for who i really am but unfortunately i missed my chance of meeting the real person to make me feel this true love by meeting u first and being emotionally scared and forever afraid to go through this pain again..
i dont blame u if this doesnt make any sense at all but it does to me and i needed to write it somewhere
thank you
Another meaning of hoodoo.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/26/08
Hoodoo also means "bad luck" or "to bring bad luck" or "a person that brings bad luck." I'm thinking this definition probably has more to do with the song than the geological formations as mentioned below, but I could be wrong. It would just seem to tie into the lyrics a little more, such as the last 4 lines about missing the opportunity to be a better man. Seems a bit unlucky.
Hoodoos... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/17/08
Wikipedia is your friend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodoo_%28geology%29
As for its meaning in the song, I can only submit my opinion. Hoodoo's are basically geological formations created by glacial water melting and forming wondrous formations over many years. Perhaps they mean to compare them to the wearing away of ourselves through relationships and experiences, leaving the one whom we wanted to be loved for behind, and becoming the beautiful creations that are loved.

This song is incredible. The last lines really get to me. "I have had recurring nightmares, that I was loved for who I am, and missed the opportunity to be a better man".
At first I thought this was a really strange thing to say, doesn't everyone want to be loved for who they are? but now it's something I live my life by. This song makes me want to go out and do better with my life.
I agree with mark, the first few times I listened to BH&R it didn't really register with me either, but when I really listened to it, it quickly became one of my favourite songs because it has so much passion, depth and meaning.
I couldn't love Muse more:D
