What is The City of Delusion | Reviewer: Sean | 9/20/09

I've heard a lot about how cool this song sounds, but nothing about what the lyrics mean. Anyone who listens to this song has the capacity to appreciate its sound. But only a few people can appreciate what the lyrics say. So lets get some debate going about what the lyrics mean.

The musical aspect of this song is ridiculous, and I could listen to this song for years without paying attention to the lyrics and still enjoy the song. But one day, you've gotta wonder, what does this song actually mean? And when you ask that question, you'll find that the lyrics are just as powerful as the music itself... if you can understand what the lyrics are saying. Here is what I get from the lyrics...

Stay away from me
Build a fortress
And shield your beliefs
Touch the divine
As we fall in line

Matt is telling Christians that he doesn't care what they believe as long as they stay away from him, and don't try to convert him. Christians can shield their own beliefs as long as they don't try to change his.

Can I believe
When I don't trust
All your theories
Turn to dust
I choose to hide
From the All Seeing Eye

This stanza expresses why Matt Bellamy can't consider himself a Christian... because he can't trust religious theories that have no basis in the real world. Instead of claiming to believe in theories, he turns his back from God altogether and follow his own path. The question is, what are the religious theories that he doesn't trust?

You will not rest
Settle for less
Until you guzzle
And squander whats left
Do not deny
That you live and let die

This stanza is pointing out all of the wasted efforts of religion, that while people call themselves Christians, it is only a veil, and on the inside they are not truly Christians. They "Settle for less" and "live and let die."

Destroy this City of Delusion
Break these walls down
I will avenge
And justify my reasons
With your blood

There is a lot of hate channeled towards this "City Of Delusion" that we live in in the chorus. The question is, what is the City of Delusion? If you figure that out, you have figured out the song's message. Based on how the stanzas go, I'd have to say the City Of Delusion represents Christians in the Western World. Matt is saying that Christians claim to believe in theories but when put into practice these theories "turn to dust." Why? Because Christians are don't have a deep enough understanding of their own religion. We should "Break these walls down," or reform the way Christianity works in the Western World. Think of all the things churches in America do. Many of them are good things. They put on summer camps, do service projects, give money to good causes, etc. But the main focus of Christianity has been pushed back on the priority list, and that priority is reaching out among non-Christians and bringing people to Jesus Christ. "I have no money or material goods to give you, but I can give you the love of Jesus Christ." That is Christianity. But in the same way materialism runs our country, it has started to run our religions.

Absolutely amazing | Reviewer: Miguel | 8/3/09

I can't deny what Ron Bloom said. In 20 years they'll be remembered as one of the greatest bands ever. Look at how melodically perfect is this song. The lyrics are also great.

And I love the Moorish (not Spanish) with the trumpet. I feel shivers all over my body.

lol~ | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/26/09

Oh this def is one of my favorite, next to Knights of Cydonia, Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome. Someone was trying to argue with me that Radiohead is better than Muse. I say Fcuk THAAATT to that remark! Muse = Simply the best.

Very good... | Reviewer: Helen | 8/28/08

I've only just started listening to this song...I really love it! I don't know why I didn't listen to it before...I'm sure it means something different to everyone, but the lyrics are amazing powerful...

HELL YES. Muse are definitely the most epic band I've ever come across. Love the Spanish bit in the middle - really good blending of a different sound into their music. Matt Bellamy is an absolute genius.

MUSE | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/25/08

the difference between them and all these other bands now is that the lyrics really make u think something people as a whole need to do a little more of.Actually listen to the words next time u hear their song, instead of the melody.

i ADORE muse. this is one of the most groundbreaking songs i have ever heard. their new album is definitely a force to be reckoned with. can't wait to see them live someday<3

City of Delusion | Reviewer: Ron Bloom | 10/15/07

This whole album is awsome. I truely believe that this will be a band that is a household name 20 years from now like The Rolling Stones, Metallica, or Queen. Combining musical styles reminiscent of Radiohead, Queen, Pink Floyd, and the elements of big brass, international music generes & clasic rock Muse proves they are as groundbreaking as they are innovative.

just wonderful. The second best song in the album, the best, obviously is knights of cydonia

Destroy this city of delusion | Reviewer: 'monthebiffy | 6/10/07

this song is one of my faves on the new album and i think it proves that muse can do catchy acoustic songs. How great is the bon jovi type bit in the middle.
