RE: Jealous Much? & Boomaga | Reviewer: Chris | 8/2/09 Carolyn/Boomaga, Firstly, I'm not really a "US Basher' per se, but because they're the dominant military and Economic Power (although the latter probably not for much longer as China will soon be in a position to just about cripple the US economy, just as the US threatneded to do to the UK during the Suez Crisis!), that's the reason why people tend to criticize the US - it happened to the UK when they dominated the globe for more or less 300 years...the US should be criticized for many of the terrible and disturbing things it does, but should also be praised for the generally benevolent way in which it has treated many countries and for some of the values it helps underpin. Carloyn, people with a modicum of commonsense can see that although hamburgers (not hambergers - please learn how to spell your national dish if you're going to boast about it!) are convenient and quite tasty, they are also pretty terrible for people's health and I don't think the world would be much worse off if they had never been thought of! (by the way, isn't the 'burger' just a modified version of the 'sandwich' - something which was invented in the UK!? - in fact, calling a burger a type of meal separate and distinct from a sandwich is similar to saying that 'American English' is a different language from proper English!). 'Most beautiful people in the world'!? very funny!, I have to say that that is the most ridiculous statement I have heard this week - perhaps you haven't been outside of the US very much!?. America has some very beautiful people, but the ones (women) I've seen when I've been there have on average been a little bit disappointing to what people are led to believe by watching movies - you should try Russia or Sweden. Morrissey probably isn't as good as some of the US legends, but the list you gave wasn't exactly a great hall of fame! Michael Jackson, the Eagles and Elvis will be remembered as greats, but Tupac Shakur, Dr. Hook, Kid Rock, Kiss, Aero Smith, Metallica!???? are you being serious!? Tupac's music is only really for kids, and the rest are soon-to-be-forgotten types, or average at best - a hall of fame for maybe a lesser country, but the US has produced a lot better over the years! This Morrissey song, however, is not all that good and I'd give it a 5-6 out of 10. Morrissey seems to have lost his cutting edge and sense of anger as he has gotten older. His earlier work (esp. when in The Smiths) is superior in almost every way, although even that might not be considered 'great' in the years to come!. As for Boomaga, 'closed-minded xenophobes'!? that sounds like the 'pot calling the kettle black' almost to a tee, except in this case the 'pot' is exceptionally vacuous and banal, and the 'kettle' it calls black still produces some of the world's finest talent, something it has done for 400+ years. (I'll also iterate that the 'burger' is effectively a sandwich!)......and which 'reviewer' listed many of America's world changing inventions...one of them being 'bi-focals'!!!?? bi-focals aren't exactly the industrial revolution or the web, thanks for putting a smile on my face anyway! How about taking a look at some books written by Noam Chomsky, Tim Weiner's Legacy of Ashes, or why not Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, which all give you a different view of history from what you get in the mainstream media and bring into the open some of the potential answers to "Why do they all hate us so much?". USA has had some remarkable people, amazing history, and is a fascinating country. But you're far, far, far from being beyond criticism.
