a drifter's song | Reviewer: James | 9/23/09

Great song. Lyrics and instrumentals speak to me. I've moved around all over this country from NYC to the middle of Montana, east coast to the west coast, northern border to southern border. Each place has something special about it but it never really is the place you can stay forever. This song makes me feel sane yet it also makes me feel bad about moving around so much. I've realized the more I move the harder it is to make new friends and relationships because you feel you're just going to keep moving. Currently I live in Batesville, Maine and I've been here for 5 weeks and I already feel like I want to move. This song embodies everything in my life I feel. I keep looking for something I've probably already missed.

I am a very big fan of Mouse's older stuff, but this song speaks perfectly to me. The music is very spacey, that is to say that its light but full of sound. (guitars, drums, other percusion, his voice which always sounds like 2 or three people anyway, flute etc)

The metaphor of the seasons changing are a very good tool. It hasn't been the first time its been done, but the way Isaac does it really helps hammer his point in.

My take on the song: Change is inevitable. Do you move with it? Do you stay?

The speaker of this song is clearly conflicted between this, leaving good things in the hope something better will happen. But he laments. What if his perfect life was the one he left?

is about drifters and stuff initt
how it feels when you can't find no place to be so keep running from place to place in a lonely existence. a very very good song

i like the "we'll float on" to "gonna..." to "well..." that somebody pointed out. starts with promise of a companion, then breaks down to well float on anyway, i.e. fuck it. i'm going even if your not. is kind of a lament.

Subtle aspect | Reviewer: Steve | 8/26/09

I fell in love with this song when I first heard it. I think that everyone is right on with their interpretation of the writer trying to find his fit in life. The song also mixes in the symbolism of the changing of seasons. Definitely a song about finding your place in life.

I do feel like a lot of you are overlooking the the slight sense of regret for leaving behind past places and people. In the second section the lines:

Well uh-uh baby I ain't got no plan.
We'll float on maybe would you understand?
Gonna float on maybe would you understand?
Well I'll float on maybe would you understand?

He starts out talking about the two of them moving on, but in the end only he moves on and hopes she'll understand. At the end the lines:

I didn't know what I had that day.
Walk a little farther to another plan.
You said that you did, but you didn't understand.

Looking at these, it seems he has some regret of losing this girl. In his search for the perfect fit for him, he left behind a lot of friends and loves. The line about his thoughts being too loud means that he couldn't think clearly and may have made a mistake.

The general gist of the song is the conflict between looking for that perfect place and making what you have work for you. Do you stay in one place and long for something else, or leave and long for what you left behind? My life has been about making the most of what you've got, and I can still relate to this song well. On the other hand, you always have your friends and memories wherever you go.

My 2 cents

It may not be alot, but i feel like im making the most | Reviewer: Bonnie | 7/12/09

Modest Mouse is amazing. I must say that the older yet classic words of Modest mouse usually call to one's senses..the hypnotic melody...the slight confusion at words and meanings..but that is simply the beauty of poetry expressed into short and even irregular metaphors. Has anyone noticed that certain songs have the same lyrics? It always seems to be a tiny trick, a slur of words identical to those sang once before, barely noticeable yet easy to catch on.

I wish Ugly Casanova (Edgar Graham or Isaac Brock whomever it truly is) would produce another album. I think I would die of happiness.

This song makes me think about our human qualities.

Sometimes we make random decisions, and go along with it acting on impulse. He kept walking, drifting, searching for something, anything. Couldn't really find what he wanted because he didn't know.

Great fucking song. Really appeals to emotion.

This song, in my own opinion, touches this place that's somewhere in between bittersweet, happiness, and humility. The long instrumental piece allows the listener a form of reflection after the subtle message is played.
Try not to sing along, try not to move your head to the bass. Sit there, and listen. Take in the words that are spoken, even if you do not understand it, and listen to the supporting music. You can only then understand this song's full message.

Why would you call someone "retarded" just because their interpretation of a song is different from yours?? I'm sure your genius Isaac Brock would say it's open to interpretation for each listener. Let people take from it whatever they want. It's music, that's the point! You must be a child...

did i want love? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/1/09

so he's a drifter and he's searching for something unattainable, a comfortable position; a perfect lean in the classroom seat? i think that its everyone; we turn left or right and we can't escape the hurt or little sufferings. The undertow is precisely the origin of the song. Rejoice to the fact that life keeps moving and that being bored is when we feel like there isnt one.
much love,
T
