It's as if her whole identity is based around her relationship...and she doesn't know herself at all. I think she realizes that in order to be complete... she must let go of this relationship and find out who she is. You can't truly love someone until you love yourself completely. She is skeptical in breaking up with her boyfriend... but she knows she can't be the woman he needs. And she battles with whether or not she should leave him and he is resisting; but, she knows herself better and knows what she needs. love the song enough to write this whole thing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/20/09 to me this song is talking about a girl who's already broken up with the guy. in the beginning it says how she left and it was because he wasn't giving her everything he could. to her it was either everything or nothing at all. in the chorus she's explaining to him how she doesn't know how she'll be able to live on without him, or see him with someone else after such a long time and so much love they've held but she has to because she was the one who let go, and she knows that if she hadn't, in the end it won't be the same when she says " cause she will love you more then i could she who dares to stand where i stood " the first line sounds a little sarcastic to me. as in she won't be able to love you the way that i did at all but she might think she will because the guy is expressing to this new girl a devotion that he was afraid to show the one who's singing. the second line makes me come to this conclusion because of the way it is wrote. kind of like " how dare you " . how dare she think that she could take the place of someone who's shown more to this man then any other woman combined. and finally with verses 3 and 4; in 3 she's saying how she always believed that she know exactly how much his love to her. it's either he did or he didn't, which in the end he didn't. and the friendship they've kept holding onto although this new girl is around isn't going to end. " but you ain't leaving without a fight " . he obviously doesn't want to let her go. maybe he's hoping that in the future things would be the same again, that maybe he just needed time away from the whole couple stress because they've been together for so long. & this sudden fight coming from him has her " torn " . she no longer knows the meaning of love. it's not black and whites anymore. they've combined creating various shades of gray verse 4 she is telling him that she would always be around. she'd be in his heart as he will be in hers and if he ever needs her she's only one call away. how can she not be if he's the only person she's ever truly loved ? and then she's saying... since it was you who taught me to trust myself, to reach out for the things that would help me find me, i have to find a way to be able to rely on myself and to accept this new woman in your life.
