It's a metaphor for 'Tall Poppy Syndrome', a term meaning when someone gets 'too big for their boots' (ie arrogant, vain, proud) they will be 'cut down' or slammed by critics and the media. After her successful first album, people were quick to label her "the next big thing" but Missy wasn't comfortable with the attention and went backpacking for six months, away from the spotlight. She song reflects her lack of desire for public scrutiny and the fickleness of fame. Bittersweet | Reviewer: corpus | 11/9/07 i've always thought this was about survival from molestation and abuse. the beginning is really telling -- an innocent hiding from her torturers. but, the title character is a sugarcane, a tall, resilient plant, who has survived. i think missy may be comparing her experience of sex work to the abuse the little girl experienced; how she's more lucky cause she never is forced to be touched and that she can leave her situtation.
