The Reviews about Sugar Cane (page 1/1)
------ performed by Missy Higgins

fantastic song! | Reviewer: lew | 8/25/09

im a dancer and we danced to this song at a work shop at a dance competition and the teacher/ judge told us that the song was about her hiding from someone and not wanting to be near them and this related to missy because she was hiding from her fame because it came upon her so fast.

stunning lyrics | Reviewer: chloe | 8/13/09

the lyrics show a contrast between a child and adult, and how each of their lives differ. the child is scared and hiding in a corner, hiding from her fate or from reality perhaps. she has low self confidence and does not stand up to tell others who she really is. instead, the 'ballerina' lets others bring her down.

the second verse depicts the child grown up, in first person, rather than in third person as the first verse was. this proves that the woman is remembering herself as a child, so scared and alone. though the woman seems to have grown to lead an immoral life as an erotic dancer of some sort. she wanted to be able to help her younger self, though realises her childhood is the reason she has such a bad life now.

It's not about molestation at all.
In various interviews Missy said the song was about fame and being in the public eye. It's a metaphor for 'Tall Poppy Syndrome', a term meaning when someone gets 'too big for their boots' (ie arrogant, vain, proud) they will be 'cut down' or slammed by critics and the media.
After her successful first album, people were quick to label her "the next big thing" but Missy wasn't comfortable with the attention and went backpacking for six months, away from the spotlight. She song reflects her lack of desire for public scrutiny and the fickleness of fame.

i've always thought this was about survival from molestation and abuse. the beginning is really telling -- an innocent hiding from her torturers. but, the title character is a sugarcane, a tall, resilient plant, who has survived. i think missy may be comparing her experience of sex work to the abuse the little girl experienced; how she's more lucky cause she never is forced to be touched and that she can leave her situtation.
