to me, this song is talking about depression and the mentality of someone that doesnt want to admit that they have a problem..
"Katie was a little girl who said "I'll find a way".
Katie was a little girl who said "it'll be ok"."
i think it means that she's trying to find a way out of it without medication or therapy and that even though she's not getting help for it it'll be okay. and then the line "I'm alive and I am free, but you see I have control over me." is like saying that she's still alive, and she's not being held down by anyone but she's in control over her emotions.
and shes just pushing everyone away because she doesnt want anyone to tell her what to do and shes constantly being asked if one day she'll just give up and give in to getting help.
but she "never was okay" so she just ended it by drowning. and she thought that because she'd pushed everyone away no one would care anymore.
but thats just me.

Okay so, one of the Katies that also reviewed this song... (there's a lot of us)
i struggled with anorexia for some time and i totally had the same take on the song... to me it was about the control of an eating disorder
but i guess it's really pretty up to interpretation... all about the personal background you bring in.
wonder if this is what she had in mind.

My closest friend is going through depression right now. She's tried everything, and I think it got to the point where she almost killed herself.
This song is so divese, the way everyone sees it, and its easy to relate to. The most unexpected people are usually depressed - my best friend, for instance, is usually happy-hyper.
Go Missy. You can relate to us!
Meanings Vary | Reviewer: Ashlee | 7/24/08
I find it interesting that people say "the song means this, or the song means that." When Artists sing songs they are obviously thinking of something specific, but regardless, songs have different meanings for different people. When someone hears a song, they take everything into account that they have experienced. Songs are diverse for everyone. As long as it is meaningful for someone, it can mean whatever they need it to mean. There is not really a right or wrong. let it go and let music do what it does best.
awesome | Reviewer: Katie | 5/26/08
I love this song. I think Missy Higgins has an awesome voice and I really admire her committment to her music and lyrics. As you can tell, my name is also Katie. I've had a really hard time this year, I struggled with depression after my dad unexpectedly moved out and my parents got a divorce. I was suicidal, and after i started meds for depression, I heard this song and I totally identified. It made me realize that it was totally worth sticking around and living my life. THANK YOU

this song very accurately describes anorexia and how it makes a person push everyone away ("Turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know") in an attempt to control the little part of their life that they can, which is food.

Katie song thoughts | Reviewer: Paul Shawler | 10/23/07
resiliency, first off is what I think the song is detailing
It's a story of a girl who has pushed so much in her life and keeps going still. She comes to a point where she has to face those hard times due an event that makes her feel like it may be the last blow to knock down the house. She relapses, but then recovers by realizing she has control over the situation even though it seems like she is just going with what happens.
She does have a picture of leaving, and drawing the line. How long would you stay in a situation that wasnt good for you? How easy is it to pick up and leave your family?
She has so many people telling her to get out and just leave. She can't turn away from reality. Out of sight doesnt mean out of mind.
She said "go", is she talking about the people who are telling her to get out and leave? or is she pushing the thoughts that have molded her to leave her, bc she is in control? Who knows. The fact that suicide does becoming easier after someone else does it, doesnt mean it will happen bc a song may reference depression.
Be a friend
