Um, he wrote this song because he felt odd being a Christian Scientist as as child. He couldn't play football because he wasn't allowed to get a physical, he had to leave class when they were going to talk about the human body. And he had to explain why he had to leave. (He was only seven at the time) If I am the only who knows this, search "The Got That Failed Interview James Hetfield"

Metallica made this song after Hetfield mom died from cancer because of her christain science believes. If my mom died like that id write a song like this too. almost all extreme metal bands are athiest then classical tend to be more religious, like black sabbath. And it doesnt critize christanity but christain science.

Ignorant | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/24/07

I believe the Bible doesn't need to tell you how to sleep with your wife. Yet God gave sex to man. I think it's really ignorant to look around and see the ways God provided for us in order to enjoy our lives and yet give credit only to ourselves. Since WE as humans never fail, I wonder why there's alot of wars. We blame God for wars YET WE CREATE THEM! How would you feel if God said "SHUT UP! I'M TAKING AWAY YOUR FREE WILL!" That wouldn't be really just would it? We ask WHERE IS GOD?! And you know what? The Bible says that if you seek Him with all of your heart you'll find Him! We tend to seek God only when something goes wrong. NEWS! God is there all the time but how often do we ask Him to handle our problem?! God is there just to be blamed for OUR mistakes. You might say "man is above God, that's why man's action are more notable!" My answer to that is look back at history the way man made it, World War I and II. Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. Beautiful history isn't it? The World Trade Center, Hmmm God is to blame! Awesome! SHUT DOWN THAT IGNORANT EGO OF YOURS!!! WE CREATED THAT!!! GOD GAVE US BRAINS AND FREE WILL!! LOOK WHAT WE ARE USING IT FOR!!!

God is a healer, it's scientifically evident that He healed people. NEWS! These people depended on Him. Didn't God create medicine? Why do we take credit for "healing" someone? hehehe I would love to see man create his own materials to create medicine! that would be alot of fun to watch! Luke the Disciple was a Dr. He used medicine. Refusing taking medicine is totally ignorant of God, and of His grace. There is no blasphemous act in taking medicine. Those who say it's blasphemy have got it all wrong and they should really read the Bible and see what it talks about! James' parents were wrong! their belief was wrong!

I'm up for any argument about that, but please don't be narrow minded as most atheists are. You guys crack me up!

I LOVE this CD, and the sound of this song, but I found this song's lyrics a bit disturbing, probably in the same way as the reviewer's wife did. In general, I haven't found a blatant Satanic or Anti-Christ theme throughout Metallica's music as I have seen in other metal music, which is one of the reasons I still listen to it after having become a born-again Christian. After all, God never said any particular music was evil in and of itself, and I hate it when some Christians try to say otherwise, as it tends to give us all a bad rap in being "judgemental," which I am definitely NOT. I don't even go to Church, as I don't want to be labeled in some "denomination," but I love the Bible and God Himself and have never regretted my faith.

Anyway, after reading Albinus' review, citing the fact that James' parents were Christian Scientist disciples, I now understand what happened to prompt this song. Any time people take God's word out of context and form a man-made religious cult based on the errant understanding (i.e. misapply faith to not using medicine - something God clearly gave and even supported in the Scripture itself), bad things result...usually death. That's why God warns us to hold fast to the truth in Scripture, and tells us not to add any errant teachings to it at the end of Revelation. It's definitely sad that this happened, and I feel for James in a major way. That's a real tragedy.

It's cool that Gazza knows a bit about Jesus' teachings, but he misquoted Jesus' teachings and took them out of context by claiming "Jesus says that all prayers will be answered if only people have faith." In the context of the whole of Scripture, Jesus doesn't say that at all. Instead, the Judean-Christian Bible teaches that we should pray to conform ourselves to God's will for our lives, and that His will brings us inexpressible joy and peace. In general, God does say he will answer our prayers, but He doesn't always say YES, and as His creations (human beings), we certainly don't know enough about the universe and all its' facets such that we can judge God's decisions. God may have wanted to bring James' parents home to Heaven to save them from something far worse than death or dying (seen the Bruce Almighty movie?). Who knows, but for sure I can now understand why he wrote the song. I would agree with James that the god of the Christian Scientist religion fails, as that god is a man-made idol and therefore worthless to save people here or in the afterlife. Only a true, saving relationship with Jesus Christ, leading to being born again through faith, will truly save a person from eternal death.

Nice | Reviewer: asdf | 9/30/07

No where in the bible does it say "Take medicine" either. So dont use that silly argument. This is a good song, and medicine etc is also a belif. Just that God does fail, all the time. Medicine prevails more often.

This Song | Reviewer: Cullin | 9/13/07

Different religions tend to have different bibles and people tend to have different perceptions and interpretations of things so one of the mistakes his parents made was believing that medicine wasn't good. It doesn't tell you not to take medicine in the bible. And that is exactly why they died. It's not that their faith in God didn't matter, it's that they should have taken medicine. It really sucks that James grew up without a mother and then lost his father, but he can't blame that on God. Misinterpretations of the bible such as this I don't think will keep you from getting to heaven though. They had plenty of faith in the same God that I do, and the same God that a lot of others do.
CKRESS OUT...

Misplaced Blame... blah | Reviewer: gazza | 7/26/07

Jesus says that all prayers will be answered if only people have faith, this is clearly untrue.

This myth gives an expectation which kills people everyday and makes people believe that this life is just a preliminary for a miracle, when it is The Miracle.

Your response is a spurious justification of an unproven book written thousands of years ago somthing you can get a degree in (theology). As in the song, "you decide what you believe" "never you hear the discouraging lies"

Take a step outside of the delusion, and join reality.

Misplaced Blame | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/19/07

Sad that his parents died because of refusing to take medications / treatments that might have headled them. However, that was their own choice. No one forced them to make that decision, including (and especially) God. Blanming God is simply an exercise in scapegoating. No where in the Bible does it say you shouldn't take or use medicine. Luke, an Apostles, was Greek and a physician.

the meaning of it is... James' parents were religious, and they belived that having faith in god was the solution of everything, and it actually wasnt, cuz his parents both died because of having no medic assistance, i read something wich said that if they had treatment, they would survived. thats why The God That Failed is the name of the song... sorry for the bad english =/

Mmhmm... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/19/07

Yeah uh, "help", don't let your wife determine your musical tastes. I had a girlfriend who despised metal, but I'm into the huge Death, Black, and Heavy metal scene(including Metallica.) And, this is one of the best songs they've ever written.
Anyways, again... if you like the song, don't let your wife say "What's it about? You can't listen to it until I know what it's about!" I'm not religious, so this reflects my personal beliefs in that if there is a God, he failed miserably in everything he tried to do.

More specifically his parents were Christian scientists (as opposed to scientologists)- this song was released after his mother's death due to her religious belief refusing treatment. "Until it Sleeps" was after his father died to cancer as well.

Both of the singers parents were religious. His parents didn't believe in medicines and stuff like that. He lost both his parents from cancer. I think he could be refering to this by saying 'The god that failed'. And not that it's any of my business but don't let your wife control what you listen to. That's just not right.
