You know, it's kinda funny reading all of the reviews about this song and how many people have said that they just picked up on the awesomeness that envelopes Metallica; weather it be Larz smashing the drums,Trujillo with his monkey brads beating the hell out of the bass, Kirk killing the serious riffs on lead, or (last but not least) James Hetfield spinning the tails of dream land. I however have grown up with Metallica. My Uncle Dan used to play/sing it for me as a lullaby. It soon became my security blanket and my parents had to play it on cassette for me to fall asleep. This was in 1991

i find this to be one of their best downer/anger songs. Anyone who has ever had to battle with themselves or a mental illness can understand it. I can't speak for the writers intentions on it. It does simply describe the state of how you feel in an asylum. And as for the moon is always full line. I believe that refers to the systematically numbing routine every night. I know in my experience i never slept because it was always like a full moon night. I was always staring at the sky through the caged windows and the light from the constant suicide checks simply put represents that full moon that lights the sky and can obscure the stars around it. Very well written song. Very thought out. My review would be too long if i posted it all

Sanitarium lyrics are of a war amongst oneself a war of mind and spirit - - until you have experienced it - and i hope you dont !!!!! It is always "full moon" in a sanitarium !!!!! at least a mental facility . the mirror stares hard - if you can find one usually with someone in a white uniform -- good luck !!!! just my opinion but then again who really knows other than the writers ...

It is about war - but in yourself until you achieve it you will never know ! bars are not needed in a sanitarium - I did not want to escape at all !!!! The real world needs bars not in a sanitarium - i only needed protection from myself and still ponder over "the war" -- the moon is always full --- never saw the moon - cant go out at night !

I remeber the first time i heard this song and I knew this was me . That was around '87 ????? I was just paroled from an "episode" a month ago . There were no bars on the windows , lots of locked doors and frowning people . The food was the best part . Oh yea and painting !! water colors are my friend !!! lololol --- see ya soon my friend .
the very first time | Reviewer: RobertAguilar | 10/9/09
the very first time i heard this song i didnt even knew those guys, they where to me like old 80s rockstars with boring music, when i first heard it was in the MetallicA icon on mtv on 2001 i guess, i saw it live only cause Limp Bizkit was performing, and i went NUUUUUTTTSS WHEN THEY PLAYED IT, but now, i left behind those teenager years and the shallow groovy music i listened back then, now im into the real thing and its metallica, they are the best band of all times to me, 4 real i dont think beatles, nor rolling stones, nor elvis, metallica is the shit and their song sanitarium its like an antherm for prisioners.

sanitarium is a health facility for people with mental disorder where some are lockdown to take treatment in which some instead of getting sane on thier ill get even more seriously because they are locked on a cage/bar or something. great song by metallica very meaningful.
Good Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/15/09
this is a really good song and all but people think its about war and it can be to a point but personally... i think its about a guy who is going insane or someone in a mental institution "crazy house" "nut house" etc... all and all though very good song i love the solo the most. good one Metallica
great lyrics | Reviewer: legion | 9/2/09
i didn t listen Metellica for years but i liked this song first time i listen it.I really loved lyrics and someone writhe comment that this may been semething about war, and i agree but not nessery war like vietnam or something like i see it like personal war every day war when you fight every second for your own inner being try to be free trying to your self and everybody and evrything is trying to lock you down, it is war for our souls probably the most diffict war and i now that war very good and i am sure some of you guys here know too, that is only my impression who i see it everybody has his own look at world
Great fucking song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/13/09
To say the truth this really isn't the best song they have but it's one of them! And I'm from Harlem where all that's played is rap but I'm gonna keep metal alive with all my heart ( for the record I'm not black I'm Spanish so no racist shit please)!!!!!!! Metallica rules over metal!!!!!!!!!!
