The song is about drugs. It's as if the drugs were talking to him, telling him to lie, cheat, steal to get his high. "They betray, I'm your only true friend now." It steals the guy's trust and makes his life consumed by drugs. "I'm your dream, make you real." It's talking about how, once high, things are surreal and dream-like, yet at the same time it makes you feel good, makes you feel real. The epiphany comes at the end, with "I'm you." All this time, he has felt that he could keep his new habit under control, but by the end of the song, he's gone too far. It's sad but true; the drugs have taken over, and that's all he has been reduced to. My View of "Sad But True" | Reviewer: AC | 1/19/09 I think this song is talking about how when one thing goes wrong, the world just seems to come crashing down in your face—sometimes literally. “Hate, I’m your hate when you want love” refers to how when you are down, you can never seem to get back up again, even when you need somebody to care, but nobody does. The beginning of the song is talking about how you will generally try and find a way out of the pain, and you will find it, take advantage of it, and that ends up crashing down like everything else. This view can be depressing, however, this is my view. My brothers told me the song pisses of Catholics, cuz the song is about Pope John Paul. Now, I understand why James said this at every concert I've been too!
