I think it has a lot to do with the way Hetfield was raised in a Christian Sience family (in terms of theme he wrote quite a lot of lyrics that dealt with this subject one way or the other). I guess it kinda alienated him from real-life/reality in certain ways (hence: "barred reality") and caused a great deal of confusion for him as he was growing up. The first time I heard this song, it really blew me away. The guitars sounds incredibly loud and James's performance on the vocals tells a lot on all the pain and frustration he has inside. From what I understand, the song itself is about a child growing up sheltered from the world. His/her parents keeping away anything they dont agree with, and that same child hating his life growing up. Later in the song the child has gotten out and living alone, seeing the "flawed reality" of what his parents had not made him ready for. "Hidden from this thing that they call life". I can't say I understand all of his lyrics in this, but that just made the most sense to me... but what do I know?
