great stuff | Reviewer: jjp | 11/27/09
Awesome song, glad they've started playing it live in more recent years. I think it has a lot to do with the way Hetfield was raised in a Christian Sience family (in terms of theme he wrote quite a lot of lyrics that dealt with this subject one way or the other). I guess it kinda alienated him from real-life/reality in certain ways (hence: "barred reality") and caused a great deal of confusion for him as he was growing up.
Abortion | Reviewer: DuckHunter | 11/21/09
This song is clearly about abortion, from the point of view of the child. The lines ''But Damn You for Not Giving Me My Chance'' and ''You Clipped My Wings Before I Learnt to Fly'' made me realize what this whole song is about. Anyway...Fucking Kickass Song!! Simply Awesome! haha!
sheltered | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/14/09
i think it's a child being mad at his parents for sheltering him in his adulthood. i think he was sheltered as a child, and as he grew up, he had to face the real world with no preparation from his parents. i think it is pointing out what is wrong with sheltering a child.

The song is about childhood angst and growing up and finding out that your parents were right in sheltering u from the start. the song goes in stages from the first verse to the last. picture it as a timeline of a young boys life into adulthood. when were young we always almost hate our parents for not letting us do what we wanna, then when we grow up we realize that our parents were sheltering us from a tough life..thus the final line "living out this hell you always knew"

This song is unbelievable! The first time I heard this song, it really blew me away. The guitars sounds incredibly loud and James's performance on the vocals tells a lot on all the pain and frustration he has inside. Kirk's solo is just sick and is one of my favorites. Great way to end this kick ass album! Greatings from Montreal Canada.
My understanding... | Reviewer: Drew | 9/25/09
I love this song, can't say where I'd place it amongst the other songs of theirs, but its amazing.
From what I understand, the song itself is about a child growing up sheltered from the world. His/her parents keeping away anything they dont agree with, and that same child hating his life growing up. Later in the song the child has gotten out and living alone, seeing the "flawed reality" of what his parents had not made him ready for. "Hidden from this thing that they call life". I can't say I understand all of his lyrics in this, but that just made the most sense to me... but what do I know? I'm high as hell right now.

AWESOME | Reviewer: MetalMan93 | 8/22/09
Yes, awesome is the only word to describe this song. One of Metallica's fastest ones, maybe the fastest. And my favourite (with Master Of Puppets). Incredibly technical, but catchy at the same time with that mainriff that gets into your brain. And the lyrics are probably the best ones Metallica ever written: touching, almost poetic. THIS was Metallica, not the shitty stuff they're writing now!
Blown away | Reviewer: Abinash | 8/20/09
Just blown away by the poetic capability of James. To compare, how all other death doom crap metal bands come up with lyrics of mythological bullshit and dragons and demons and corpses which is absolutely not real. But, look at James, he commands the lyrics by bringing in events from his life or life in general which is very true and real. Now, that's a genius!! He is the reason Metallica is the greatest band of all time!!
Some kickass stuff | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/13/09
The title says it all, this is quite some kickass stuff. One of my favorite Metallica songs, second/third or so to Blackened (Yes, I like that, no matter what you say...seriously, it rocks). Definately my favorite album.
