This song is a cover. It was written originally by Patti Smith. It was released originally in 1978 as a form of protest against mainstream society (racism, vietnam, et al). In the spirit of Lenny Bruce, the social commentary that the song provides is biting and visceral. If anything, this song is a protest against racism and intolerance as a whole. The confusion over the songs meaning is unfortunate as it speaks against the kind of hate that created 'that word' in the first place.

he doesnt mean it literally dude...he's using the word as more of a metaphor. for example..white america has always hated the black population for no reason what so ever. so, in a way, he is using the word to describe how people will hate anything thats different. and with himself being white it is a little obvious that he was portraying the word " nigger" (pardon myself) as a synonom for society's out casts. :) sry for spelling
