------ performed by Madeleine Peyroux
A Very Rare Singer Sings A Very Rare Song | Reviewer: Chris Cobb | 7/17/2007Why is it so difficult to write about music? To write about how Madeline Peyroux sings? There's no substitute fo just hearing her voice, listening to it. So go and listen to it. Music reviews are just a form of self-expression. Reviewers are just lost souls.
For those of us who have gone to extrordinary lengths to hear the best Jazz music possible, there is nothing, really nothing that can compare to a brilliant vocalist. In many regards Jazz allows the sort of nuance and space to really feel what a singer is saying with each song. When I was a teenager I would travel to Yoshi's in Oakland to watch Betty Carter do her thing. Carter was one of the last great Jazz vocalists; one whose voice was an instrument in the band in the same way a saxaphone or piano was. Madeleine Peyroux, in her cover of "Between the Bars," adds nuance to each verse and builds the song into a rich emotional landscape one can get lost in. It is really just impossible to adequately write about her music. I don't think I can do it. It's too complicate. Really.
