This poem bases on the true story, which took place in XVII century. John Nevison - the Highwayman - lived in the York shire (1640-1685). He escaped many times from prison, but finally they captured him setting a trap. But the end of this poem is only an author's fantasy. Nevison was captured and hanged in Knaveshire.
