The Reviews about Shadow Of The Day (page 3/ 5)
------ performed by Linkin Park

I think the most beautiful songs are like this. Simple! Every song is left up for interpretation... why else would they write them? I find that in the first verse
"I close both locks below the window
I close both blinds and turn away
Sometimes illusions are so simple
Sometimes goodbye's the only way"

He's doing it what he can to stop thinking or looking at something that he once found so beautfiul and special but for whatever reason has to pretend he no longer cares in an attempt to move on.
And the chorus I find phenomenal!
"And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you"
The passing of giving up or forgetting about the person or thing will still affect all! That despite all his attempts the sun will set and his life with be gray.... and he'll still know despite his "illusion"

i wish this didn't... | Reviewer: taylor | 1/30/08

remind me of my ex.

it would be so much more simple if songs didn't have such emotional connections...at the same time, the emotional connection is purely wonderful. It saves the artist a lot of expression when they can convey their meaning simply instead of having to complex-ify everything.

Not so literal... | Reviewer: Ashley | 1/28/08

It might not be so much about suicide as just letting go of things that he/she might have thought to be true or, letting go of unreachable dreams or faulty hopes. “And the sun will set for you” part to me is more just saying that things end even if you love or want to keep them close. “Sometimes beginnings are so simple” I thought when I heard this song that this meant something like when have something at first its new and you don’t always think about the negatives until you have to work to keep it then it all seems so much more difficult. I agree with the person that said that that it makes us all think of something bittersweet that’s happened to us. This whole song isn’t so much precise meanings and literal lyrics; I think it is supposed to mean a lot to everyone who listens to it. It reminds us of things that end, people that we lose along the way, anything really depending on the listener. In all reality most songs are like that though, for you to determine.

My take on the lyrics :) | Reviewer: thekilroywashere@yahoo.com | 1/24/08

I would say that when he says:
"I close both locks below the window, I close both blinds and turn away"
-he locks his heart to the pain. And then he blinds himself to all
future pain. When he turns away it means it's a closed matter and
he refuses to discuss the pain with anyone.

And this bit:
"Sometimes illusions are so simple" -tells us that he puts this brave
face on to the world...he bottles his emotions up inside and no matter
how much he tries to tell himself he locked his heart up and can't feel
the pain it's just an illusion for his friends and family to see or for
the friend who's leaving to see. So they won't see how they hurt him.

"Sometimes goodbye's the only way" -it's like the person this song is
about says this to him at some point to make him realize he needs to
let go. And he repeats it to himself later and realizes it's true.

The chorus I'll get to later.

This bit...I don't know...it seems like he's talking to whoever it is.
I mean if someone said (not sang) these next
four verses at you. What would you think they were saying?

"In cards and flowers on your window,
Your friends all plead for you to stay" -Seems like he's saying it...
it's a statement and it just shows that whoever this person is
they are well loved and wanted.

"Sometimes beginnings are so simple,
Sometimes goodbye's the only way" -He means that to begin you have to
end. I think here he is actually giving permission to whoever it
is to leave or to die and they do.

"And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you
And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in grey
And the sun will set for you" -This is him finally saying goodbye. It's
his dedication throughout the song to whoever this person was in his
life. But it's also him saying that this person will be remembered.
To say that the sun itself would be moved to set in the sky just for
this person sets a very brilliant mental picture and let's you know
this person is special.
The shadow of the day implies the person did die and that the world
is in grey or in mourning.

To me it sounds like this whole song is an explanation to the person
that it's about...like he's explaining why he acted the way he did.
This is just my take on it!

well.... | Reviewer: lalalalalalalaim a crackhead | 1/21/08

i dont really think this song is as great as ppl make it sound. i mean, its not bad considering its by linkin park but cmon. its like, the most simple lyrics u can write and 2 notes played over and over again. the reason why i luv music is becuz of the talented musicians. u no. the ones that play like 200 note guitar solos and are extremely amazing and the lyrics are the shit cuz they can not make sense but still be kick ass anyway and sound totally cool. take zeppelin 4 example.
im not saying this song sucks, im just saying its not that great and there are tons of better artists out there

i think this song has a meaning for everybody. It might be someone leaving or someone commiting suicide. It can also mean a relationship ending. When they say that he closes the locks or the blinds i think he means he wants to forget his memories and past and start a new life and beginning. All of the bad past is going to turn the world in grey. The person that is leaving it behind...the sun will set for them. the sun is setting basically means that the past is ending. People and things try to hold you back but you need to continue on thats why it says that new beginnings are hard. Incredible song.

What it means to me | Reviewer: Jessica | 1/18/08

The first time I heard this song I was laying in bed listening to the radio before I went to sleep. It made me start crying immediately. My older cousin and I are very close and he's me hero. He made the decision last summer that he was going to join the Army. I know it's what he really wants to do, but even though he's not even leaving until July 8th, I'm already terrified by the thought of what might happen to him. All I really want is for him and the rest of the troops (or future troops) to be safe. I love you. I'll miss you. Stay safe.

What you make of it. | Reviewer: Trevor Hansen | 1/2/08

Honestly, I think that this song is up to us to finish. The last line states that your friends plea for you to stay, in all reality, we have the choice wheather to stay or to go. Suicide, moving away, whatever the case may be, the sun sets only to show that there is another day, it's what's in the day that important to me, not the end of the day. When I end my date with my girlfriend and we talk about our day, it's my memories that will embrace the world in grey, cause grey is a happy medium color.

leaving | Reviewer: person | 12/15/07

this song is definately about the concept of leaving, whether it be a place, a person or life. to me this song is about a person who has to start a new life (or the end of their life) and the sorrow that follows their departure. i cant help but think its about a relationship that had to end due to external circumstances (like one of the people having to move away etc). whatever the meaning its a very moving song.
