It appears to be taking place during a war of some kind, most likely in the United States. In the beginning, the clock by his bed reads 11:55 corresponding to the Album, Minutes from Midnight. I am assuming that Midnight would mean the end, and signal destruction for either man-kind or oneself. I don't think this song is about suicide as a lot of people are saying. I think it is most likely about loosing someone else. By saying "The Sun will set for you" I think they are referring to either a person who is dying or to mankind as a whole. If you listen to What I've Done, you could easily see why it might be referring to mankind.
