There shines white light. | Reviewer: Jake shapiro | 10/20/08
I think it's a legitimate thing to question as to whether or not there are satanic messages. But here's what I think. They wanted us to find these, if they are, in fact, intentional. The only reason they didn't come right out and say it is the theme. Satan is said to work in mysterious ways, hence the hidden phrases. But I don't think they ment for people to think they were pro-Satan. I think they just wanted that to be part of the song, but hid it to be mysterious.
The part I love most about this whole thing is the end of the song. If you look at it from the point of view that they are telling a story, the end seems like it's good versus evil all throughout the song, and in the end, the good side of the tale is shining through with all that power and vanquishing the evil possibly hidden in the song earlier.
Subliminal | Reviewer: Bazza | 8/30/08
I like the serinity of the song, yo be honest i love the up beat songs like Custard pie and The Wanton Song. I still put this song in my favourites. A couple of days ago i was searching hypnosis and such and eventually i looked at subliminal messages. I found This song with satanis massages. Im not religous, but it made me sad, afraid and withdrawn when i discovered the messages.
Observe, this is the verse that displays satanic implications played foward.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
It so beutiful, but then backwards...
Oh here's to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan. He'll give you give you 666, there was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.
If you want to know how to open it yourself without public tampering go to: http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/users/06/adem/random/stairway%20to%20heaven%20backwards.php
or if you are a lazy screw like me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iduFTKST8PQ
Now i have been doing brief searching.
Some mention that they did drugs in a toolshed. others say that a "toolshed" refers to a satanic church. Also in the actual lyrics above it states "'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings", "Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven", "And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last" these phrases give enough implication that if you do listen carefully that there is a second meaning. It does not tell the listener to worship the devil at all. Maybe Led Zeppelin took the song to the next level to mention that there its a stairway to hell and heaven, making contrast in the song. "Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on"
doesn't this give all the explanation you need? allegedlly have been satanic symbols embedded in album covers, art ect. So could this support the idea that they are satanic or just adressing satanism without support? There are many possiblilitys of how they got that message in their song. They claim not to have done it intentionally. Well if you listen to other songs backwards if phrases appear when the song is played backwards, they make NO sense at all. Or the phrase it short such as Britney spears "sleep with me im not too young" in hit me baby one more time (i fucking hate that song) so the possibilitys are that those who belive that They were compelled by Lucifer (the devil) himself to put those phrases in without any controll whatsoever, that could be valid until disproven the existence of the devil. Or they did put them in intetionally with the reasons of:
1. teenagers seek thrill and by putting those messages in there sales would rise by exitment of the conspiracy or because they played the record too many times and wrecked it, hence having to buy another one.
2. Compelled by the devil unintentionally
3. To mention there is the stairway to hell, and putting more meaning in the song without any desire of giving the listeners to follow satanism.
4. Mentioning personal experiences or feelings with our without the intention of it seeming heavily satanic.
5. They are satanic.
6. compleatly unintentional and by sheer chance.
Now i have givin you all the possibility's you can make your own decidion. I love Led Zeppelin and hope that they were not compelled by the devil or that that they were followers. Honestly whatever option it was they make kick ass music and it if you are not an idiot or phsycotically derranged you can enjoy this song without it effecting you. I prey that no stupid teenager takes it to blame their suicide, murder, criminal acts. Judas priest is my favourite band and subliminal messages of satan and suicide were discovered. Two boys killed themselves and they, their perants or detectives claim that Judas Priest caused it. Subliminal messages would only effect those who are psycotically ustable and who seek answers to their actions through blaming others.
It was 2am when i listen to it. My dads house is cold, dark and scary...like a modern murder house. I was scared to go to bed Hahaha. I was upset that such a beautiful song was turned into something so evil so i played it foward and backward endlessly and ended up crying (I dont cry often, how womanly of me) but when you listen to it carefully, REALLY carefully, it does make you sad. It puts emphasis on the phrase "sad satan" and "his little path" did they have empathy for him???
The Greatest | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/20/08
Without a word of doubt, this is the greatest rock song of all time, from the greatest rock band of all time. It is just purely epic. How Swan Song signed a record deal to these I'll never know. Zeppelin are far too epic to be controlled by anybody. THE STAIRWAY LIES ON THE WHISPERIN WIND!

This song is beyond brilliant. It's sheer beauty of songwriting at its very best. Just open your mind and stop analyzing every little thing they sing/play. If you can do that, it doesn't matter what it means. It's an experience better then anything else.
Peace!

satan is an medieval invention, there isn't any record of such a thing in the catolic church before 1400, is a key word for "any pagan god"
Read the bible, all that isn't acepted as "divine" is satanic, even goin' to the bathroom
the oldes record of a god called satan or shaitan is from the Yazidian god Melek Taus Shaytan the Peacock Angel, abaut 2000, leader of the archangels and patron of the good
so, it relly metters?
just play the song forward and enjoy it.

alright, clap clap, good intsrumentals, really it is a good song i won't lie, but theres a discussion of weather or not theres a backward message; yes there is, and yes, its totally possible that satan fucked it up so that they would say something, but i'd say the chances are slim, look at the i think its 4 or 5 symbols that led zeppelin has that are satanic, and again, its possible that they didn't know that either, but, to have both satanic symbols used by the band itself, AND to have a hidden message, are even more slim than the fact that there IS a hidden message.
and plus, the forward message says she's buying a stairway to heaven, that your shadow (resembling darkness) is taller than your soul(which resembles purity)
at the beginning it also says; "cause you know sometimes words have two meanings" which COULD, be him pointing at the backwards message indirectly
and at the end it says "if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last" which again, could be him pointing at the backwards message indirectly,
and.... maybe it doesn't mean some of the things i think it means. but whats the chance that all three of the points i made are all wrong, if they knew those symbols were satanic, than they would have been doing the backwards message intentionally. and even if neither of those are true, again, the forward message is pretty bad itself.
and last, who cares what this song means? well, if you yourself are into satanic worship or masonry which are considered the same thing by many, than you probably don't give a rats ass.
or if your an athiest, you really just laugh at the meaning and just care if its good or not. not worrying about the meaning, but if your a true christian, you should be worrying about whats unknowingly getting into your head, those backwards lyrics are fuckin creepy dawg..
oh haha..
and if you play the "pokemon rap" backwards you know when it goes;
got catch em all, gotta catch em all
it somehow says
i love satan, i love satan..
i don't know how it does it with that one.. buttt whatever..
just my thoughts and opinions on this song.
Epic | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/9/08
My favorite song of all-time... Epic is the only word that can describe it.
I would also recommend the live version on Zep's live album "How the West Was Won." I like that one just as much as, and possibly more than the original.
Awsome song | Reviewer: Dude who loves rock | 4/2/08

Satanic Brew Ha HA | Reviewer: Jeremiah Roe | 2/29/08
Ok, My sister and I wrote that Anonymous Breakdown, which we were gonna call the "Opiunated Breakdown" Cause there is know fact to what we Wrote it is in fact our Opinuin!
The Reason we were suposedly Anonymous was the computer kept goin' to page errors and crap. BOOOO
Now before I throw down a few Quotes, I must say, I personaly belive the since Rock n' Roll was always said to be "THE DEVILS MUSIC", then maybe just maybe, Satan Was jealous that Rock n' Roll was being used a a way to send the message of god to the teenage youth at that time, so satan added that crap himself to keep parents from letting their children listen to Zeppelin. In the 70's there was a huge Hoopla about revers lyrics.
(So to put it simply, Satan my have menipulated the words of Plant without Plant Realizing it.
That Tricky Bastard
Robert Plant addressed the issue in an interview with Musician magazine: "'Stairway To Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music. It's really sad. the first time I heard it was early in the morning when I was living at home, and I heard it on a news program. I was absolutely drained all day. I walked around, and I couldn't actually believe, I couldn't take people seriously who could come up with sketches like that. There are a lot of people who are making money there, and if that's the way they need to do it, then do it without my lyrics. I cherish them far too much."
Robert and Jimmy wrote this in an old mansion called Headley Grange in Liphook Road, Headley, Hampshire, where Led Zeppelin recorded most of their 4th album. It was a huge, old, dusty mansion with no electricity but great acoustics. Bands would go there to get some privacy and focus on songwriting. One night, in front of a roaring fire, Page strummed the chords to this for Robert. Plant wrote 90% of the lyrics right there in front of the fire. He has said in many interviews that he didn't seem to be writing, that something else was moving his pencil for him.

Disgusted | Reviewer: Mulvy | 3/1/08
I don't normally participate in online discussions about meanings of song lyrics but the comments I found on this site are insipid beyond belief; particularly the ones about biblical and Christian overtones. As most of you know the song was written by Plant and Page. Plant was, and probably still is heavily into the ancient European Pagan earth religions and mysticism and Jimmy Page was a practicing Thelemite. For those of you who don't know much about Thelema it’s a very eclectic Pagan cult with a heavy emphasis on personal development through occult means as espoused by Aleister Crowley. Therefore Stairway to Heaven being about exaltation of the Bible and Christianity is about as likely an interpretation as George W Bush exalting the Koran and Islam. If anything Stairway is about the futility of trying to buy one's way into heaven through good deeds and through donations to Churches, participating in masses etc. As for the precise interpretation of the song in detail, verse by verse; only Plant and Page will know what they were thinking. Like all good songs Stairway is about the universal not the particular and therefore there is a lot in the song which is deliberately left to interact with us on both a cerebral and visceral level; which by the way has nothing to do with 'revealed religions' which are actually the antithesis of that sort of thing.
Satan | Reviewer: George | 2/28/08
I believe that Led Zeppelin does infact worship god, but the verse of this song where it sais if theres a russle in my hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, if you play it backwards it talks about worshiping satan, and it can't be just a coincidence, because it is in perfect english.
This ties in with led zeppelin and his daughter because there are rumors he sold his soul to the devil.
Collectors of Glitter | Reviewer: Deni' | 2/28/08
Sadly, our world is full of people who are collectors of glitter, which is blown here and there at the slightest breeze. To many, nothing seems real or believeable anymore ~ If not careful, they allow themselves to be blown here and there at the slightest sound of the winds of "change" ~ They stand looking and listening ~ believing if they will follow the piper all will become as one. The changes we want to see have to begin with us. We can become as a "rock that will not roll" at every new idea that may change with the wind ~
Breakdown | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/18/08
My brother and I think this song is about the road to Christ and not just taking the easy way out to get to heaven. It's about a woman who thinks that no matter what, everyting that looks good to her IS a good thing, but she's wrong. Life's not that simple. (I.E.) Cookies are delicious, but if you have too many, that one good thing will make you fat. (And I'm not saying the song is about cookies for all the idiots out there that don't understand symbolism.) The stores that are closed aren't literal. It's as though even if she feels like she can't find someone to talk to or communicate with, there is always Jesus. So she's trying to find the easiest way to heaven, hence "a" stairway. The sign on the wall is the words and the book of the Lord, but she wants to be sure what is written is the Truth. Because that beautiful voice of the songbird may be the manipulating voice of Satan. (Does that make you wonder?) So when you realize where you've been heading isn't the right way, you begin to think about how to get back without falling back into your old ways or with the people who took you there. But if you listen to Jesus, he will lead you back to where you need to be: Eternal Happiness. So if you do slip up and find yourself back on the old ways, don't worry, just have faith and pray and Jesus (the piper) will lead you back to the right path. It's never too late. Whether it's early in life or on your deathbed, there is no time limit. So if you find yourself falling behind, and you hear a voice inside yourself trying to tell you to catch up, that's Jesus calling you back to him. So the woman realizes that not all the answers are obvious, but they're there right in front of you. Like the wind. You can't see it, but it's right there in front of you. So as we walk through life with our sins and burdens weighing us down, God is always there to help shed them and light the way. (The "lady we all know" is NOT the lady buying the stairway, she is GOD. Some people refer to God as a she.) And GOD wants to us to know that even the things in life that might seem dull and unappealling, really aren't. They are important in the walk with GOD. Like going to church, or work, or school, or turning in that wallet filled with money you found in the mall, because doing the things that are good and help you succeed in life are GOLD! So if you "listen very hard", you will realize that GOD is there for you with faith. That no matter what sins were committed or how bad something you did was, you are his child and he loves you. As long as you accept Christ as your savior, none of the sins of your past will matter, even if you don't realize that until you're on your deathbed. When all of us are in heaven together we will all be happy. Utopia. The tune is Christ. So "to be a rock and not to roll" could be to be solid in faith and not to wander. Or to know of GOD, but not have a realtionship with HIM. It's up to you on which this sentence takes meaning, because sometimes words have two. And so now the woman realizes this. She is not buying any stairway to heaven, she is buying THE stairway to heaven, because there is only ONE way to get there. For those of you who aren't particularly religous, he's still there for you as well. Even if you're bying (passing) the stairway to heaven, HE will always love you until your dying day.
