I would just like to make a note that the mother in Divine Secrets of the Ya ya Sisterhood was not dealing with Bipolar depression - she was a fall down drunk who beat her children and drove her family out of her life. This movie is very near and dear to my heart as I am a daughter who grew up with an alcoholic mother. This song is a depiction of the whirlwind that has become of the daughters life because of the abuse endured as a child. Great song, beautiful vocals.

i guess selah is undefinable...in solomon and david times, there used to b city called selah..in hebrew selah, derivative of 'calah' means to hang...in music is selah relates to stop n reflect....really its means as is in its own essence...lets not get argumentative about it..as long as we all agree that its meaning is as holy n pure, and that we all relate to it, in our inner sense, then its as is.... pause to acknowledge,so u can reflect in accopmplishment, and embrace reality as is...Amen..SELAH

hey eveything eveyone said is true but think abou this for a moment this song was used for the movie devine secerats of the ya-ya sisterhood. it was written for the move to explain what the mother was going through with her bipolar depression. i have the same depression an it was amazing seeing this movie when it came out an hearing this song. its crazy because some days when im have a really of beat moment an am at my lowest points crying out of control this song is all i have to being me through. an selah means to pause an reflect an medaitate.
Wrong Info | Reviewer: Ebum | 1/7/11
I just wanted to correct Zek when it was mentioned that Selah means god because it is the name of the Ethiopian emperor...His name was Haile Selassie not Selah. The word Selah basically means to pause/reflect, take in what was said or happened.
This Song is Beautiful | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/1/09
I believe it means exactly what she says it means in the song...prayer and meditation.
Selah defined: A word frequently found in the Book of Psalms, and also in Hab 3:9, Hab 3:13, about seventy-four times in all in Scripture. ...
In the Scripture...Selah is used to pause, have peace, and prayer...like a kind of reflection.
This song helped me out of a bad relationship...beauty at it's best. I love it when she says "cause me to agree with what I know is best for me" LOVE HER!!!
Meaning of Selah | Reviewer: Zek | 9/2/09
Guys, everything u said is beautiful and the song itself is beautiful too, but those meanings you guys gave to the word "Selah" are personal appreciations, not the actual meaning of the word.
Selah is the name of the Ethiopian Emperor that Rastafaris venerate as the last reencarnation of Jesus. The complete name is Selah Selassie I. That is why she mentions him and God. Basically because, for her, Selah IS GOD. Hope it helped.
Loving Yourself | Reviewer: Summer Britt | 8/19/09
This song is about denial of who we are. That was one of Lauryn Hills biggest struggles while being constantly in the spotlight. Not being able to be herself and people constantly talking about the chicoes she made, as if she was supposed to be what the public wanted her to be. EVERYONE has the problem of percieving themselves in a way that they feel will be accepted by society. (Like the movie PENELOPE with Christina Ricci.)
-Nothing can be done against the truth
No matter how we remain in denial, yeah
-Coping with despair
Knowing you're not there
-Trapped in misery
Wrapped so miserably
In this deception that im wearing like a skin
-Dying to mantain
Oh I keep trying to explain
A heart that never loved me to begin
Oh I'm such a mess
I have no choice but to confess
That I've been desperately trying to belong
Lying to myself
And everybody else
Refusing to admit my right was wrong
-How beautiful is fruit still in denial of its roots?
AND THEN HE CAME
Which is enough said in that small sentence. Her life changed when she accepted God. She doesn't go into to detail of how it changed her because that is something that she wants to leave to the listener to wonder on, which is why she says SELAH.
Selah has a lot of meaning but the most accpeted meaning is that it was put with music to let everyone know that this is the moment where you should STOP and REFLECT on what was just said. She wants the listener to praise and meditate, and think about the words AND THEN HE CAME.
The song then repeats the same moods and story of denial of herself and how it dissapeared when he came.
If you like this song and the message, you will love her MTV unplugged, it goes way deeper.
praise and meditation | Reviewer: itumeleng | 7/23/09
for me this song speaks about acknowledgement of mistakes made and past experiences,on the song she speaks on a number of things, her choices and mistakes particularly, and selah suggests the pause as to acknowledge what has happened and prasing god for the lesson learnt.

Selah is Amen, Amen means that we coöperate with the things said for example in the song.. Selah - when u say it at the end of a prayer means that u agree with whatever is said. It means that you are sure you agree with what you've said in a prayer or someone else said in a prayer, this is symbolic for the coöperation Lauryn longed for in the time. the assurance of her heart upon the good things instead of the bad. Her heart said Selah and as you read she says that it is seen. This is the absolute confidence in God and reassurance that it even causes her to see Him as if he were right before her. Selah - reassurance, coöperation of thoughts of the heart with thoughts of speech- causes her to see whats right in front of her
Selah.. YHWH bless all that received blessings by exercising faith in Him, and Lauryn Hill on her walk to Israel, PRAISE the Lord

This song is absolutely an inspiration. There are very few artists that embrace reality and remove themselves from the masks that cover their day to day life. Lauryn, thank you for embracing reality and inspiring others to do so. God has truly blessed you to bless others-How amazing is He! Your songs have me in tears-and not the Miseducation but MTV and all of the new songs you have done such as "The Passion" and "Lose Myself". Thank you for Re-Educating" me. When I have a daughter, I am naming her Selah. Please, please, please- I know you said that the music life became burdensome, but please, please come to Houston and do a show. You have some true fans that really miss you. You don't even have to do a show, even a meet and greet. I want to hear your thoughts on life, God and inner-growth. Thank you again for blessing the world. If people only knew the truth.
MEANING OF SELAH | Reviewer: Nash22 | 1/13/08
I was so Blessed to find this song.
I've been using the word "selah" now for a while because of it's Fantastic meaning.
It is mentioned over 43 times in the book of Psalms. In the bible, the Psalmist, who was a musician or singer, poet even, would sing to whoever...be it God...be it an earthly king or just for the sake of singing...the author/performer would say "selah" when he/she wanted someone to pay attention. Pause. Reflect on the words that have been said.
It's also true that after the word is uttered, there is a musical interlude, or Great crescendo with instruments.
That is why this song is such a...Song. For real For real.
Selah means | Reviewer: Steph | 1/9/08
This song is truly amazing. If yo utake the pronunciation of Selah but spell it according to the French "C'est La" it means "It is" such as in the phrase "C'est La Vie" or "It is life". Kind of adds another layer to this song, I think.
"Selah...And it means..." What? | Reviewer: Diavien-Mikhi* | 12/29/07
The style and rhythm of this new soul poem is breathtaking... But, do we all know what the word Selah means? Although listening to this piece takes me far away, it leaves me completely distraught when trying to define this word. In the lyrics, Hill defines the word in many terms, but oddly enough, as I search for the true definition of this word it is unknown to the Hebrew, Jewish, and English language. So what does this powerful word mean to Hill that she would even name her daughter after it? It shows no record to be named after God, and it is said to be undefined in the Islamic culture, which is what Hill is apart of. Is Selah someone I want to call out to? You do the research...
Greatness in progress | Reviewer: Stephen Rider | 11/20/07
It's amazing to listen to a child of GOD, who makes the word very simplistic and easy to the ears. We're fortunate to have her in our lives, anyway God's see's fit. Thank you very much Ms. HIll for your willingness to surrender to the awesome spirit within all of us. You give people the ability to realize more of their potential. It's definitely appreciated and received with the same love that you spewed into your work. Love, Stephen Rider
