I'd known that Cash, whose music I love, had had a some dodgy views in his earlier life, but I was shocked by these lyrics, and faced the disappointment and dilemma that you do when you find out something nasty about someone you dig. The video is still on the internet. Later on in life(70's) he talked about it. He said he realized how wrong he and everyone was back then. He was ashamed of the song and his views in his youth. Working with people in rock n roll, Charlie Pride in country and the people in prison enlightened him.
