this song asks us to move on with life, we mustn't pity the dead, we must pity the living, most those who live without love, and love as said earlier makes up for everything, and we humans are lucky to feel it. i understand your pain, but everyone has their own pain, it could something as small as loosing a toy or as big as loosing a young sibling, maybe its just meant to be. i understand that its a very hard time for you, but just gotta let go, and writing and expressing your feeling is a great way to do that. i would recommend that u read 'the book thief by maykus zusak'. i'm fourteen and i've had hardships in my life, but i let go of things that i mustn't cling onto.
Hint of Lionel Richie | Reviewer: MV | 11/14/12
Everytime i hear this song I keep thinking I hear Lionel Richies..."All Night Long". I hear The verse:"Pain throws your heart to the ground Love turns the whole thing around No, it won't all go the way it should But I know the heart of life is good"...his word timing is similar to Richies. funny cause its a sad song in conrtast to "All night long".

I think this song could be taken as romantic pain, but I don't think that's how it was meant. It may be that I just buried my mother a few days ago, but it seems that the song is much more about the pain of a lost one than a breakup.

I love this song, but I laugh every time I see (Whistle Interlude)...There is not a whistle in this entire song. Well, this is an amazing song with tons of emotion and meaning. I love John Mayer, and being a "metal head" it is shocking, but everything about John Mayer is so good. His lyrics, meaning, emotion, not to mention his talent. He's so good, and still so young. Although his last CD wasn't the best, that doesn't matter.
A good song to hear when faced with a wall of emotional Pain! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/19/11
Sometimes when the pain is so bad you can not bear anymore you need someone to say, "I hate to see you cry;Lying there in that position
There's things you need to hear;So turn off your tears and listen."
'Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No, it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
You know it's nothing new
Bad news never had good timing
Then the circle of your friends
Will defend the silver lining'
When all hope fades sometimes we need to depend on someone else's hope to carry us through. It's freind's that remind us the Life is still good despite the pain.
As someone who has been intimately aquainted with emotional pain, I know that if it hadn't been for Loving freinds that loaned me a bit of their hope I would be dead right now!

I can only begin to imagine the pain that you have felt.
I recently found out that I am terminally ill with cancer, and have not yet turned 21. I know how my family and friends have reacted with these news, especially my parents. So although I am not in your position, I guess I am causing people to feel what you feel. I also know that their pain is greater than the pain that I feel. But remember, that any pain that someone feels, it is real and serious for them. My closest friends still feel heartbreak over boyfriends breaking up with them, and that is completely normal. We can't all go comparing our pain, there is always someone else who has it worse. But this song does make it feel better for all of us, at least a litte bit.

I believe this song gives out a message of hope to everyone. Life can be harsh. Actually, it is, but always remember the Heart of life is good. We've all experienced pain and maybe some of us came to the point of giving up. Some of us had our hearts calloused by pain and disappointment. I'll tell you, life is not all about pain. We're just too busy thinking of the bad stuff that we forget where the good things are. We should rise up from our pain and grief and help others rise up from theirs. Love is powerful, my friends. The Heart of life is indeed good. :))
Great sing | Reviewer: Taffyman | 8/15/10
So simple the lyrics, so powerful a message.
I have listened to this song and looked for the deep meaning, but that isn't what I am meant to do. The message is so simple that it is easily missed. Love conquers all. When all seems lost and sorrow and pain fills you heart, along comes love and takes away the pain, but not the memory of it. It tells the listener to look to your friends who will defend the 'silver lining' their love will take away the hurt and that life is esentially good. What an elixir this song song is, more potent than a pill. Even the backing and melody is bouncy and lifting.
I now sing along with John and feel uplifted.
...touched the life in my heart | Reviewer: Judi Dozier | 6/16/10
I first heard this song at the time my Dad became terminally ill with cancer. I listened to it on the road to visit him weekly. I listened to it on the way home from his memorial service. It makes me cry each time I hear it. The melody goes right to the core of my being. The melody got to me before I actually knew the lyrics - then the lyrics blew me away as well. It is like a lullaby...it is sweet. It is a comfort in my grief, and a joy to my soul.
The Heart of Life is universal | Reviewer: vanessajean1345 | 6/6/10
I like the lyrics, when I see the heart of life in my head, I first feel it, intensely, then I see the aftershow, To me its the most intense, overflowing emotion one could possibly feel. I picture it as that intense pain when your laughing so hard that your stomache is pulsing with pain,or your so sick from that one true love that just was so tramatic it made you sick to your stomache to see it go, to lose someone,to see ababy born, your first roller coaster ride or even your first or last kiss. The heart of life is the core of a human being and everything you are or where meant to be, Its intense and "reconstructable"(also),so to speak If you have the intense good share with the intense bad around you, were not at the core, were at a neutral level, I believe that only the ones willing to feel that indepth have the power to live in the center, core heart of life and thats a gift to do as they can with it for the who need an extra bost as the girl in this song,Although hers is temporary in his opinion,if it was as I see The Heart of Life, It will take alot to ever release that pain, although If shes gifted maybe its others peoples pain and it will brush off like a leaf in the wind?? Just some food for thought, love the lyrics..I think that his music is outstanding all of it...... This is in review of his lyrics and in reading the comments posted,no one should judge anyones emotions, nobody knows the absolute depth of them. SOmetimes these conversations are so of the hook,

Though I do sympathize with you for the losses you have endured, I do not pity you. As well, I do not agree with what you said.
You cannot rank pain; everyone goes through different degrees of pain and making it into a competition of who the song better applies to is pointless.
The beauty of this song is that we all connect with the lyrics; just notice how many people have written to you. We all go through hardships, but it's unfair to say the song better applies to yourself because that's just being selfish.
But Heather, if you ever read this, I truly hope your life has shaped up since you wrote this note. I truly, truly hope this. Cheers.

This song has helped me so much i dont understand why people have to make every song that they hear is about a break up if you really listen to the song it says love turns the whole thing around this song has helped me get through loosing my parents and sister and finding out i have cancer it tells me to look at the brighter side of life

Caught this at the end of Ghost Town, great movie btw. And what a gem of a song it has tagged to the end of it. I almost died when I heard it was John Mayer. He's not been my favorite tabloid personality, but his music has made me a fan.
something for everyone | Reviewer: Alex | 7/22/09
If you ever read this, understand that as much as we sympathize, and may try to understand, there is a point where we have to move on. As a person who's lost a mother, a brother, and multiple grandparents before the age of twenty, i must say, at some point we all have to move on, and searching for sympathy is much less productive and helpful to the soul than reaching out with a song and treating others fairly. at some point we are all equal. I think this song is great, with a simple kind of theme, and a hopeful feeling and tone, it rally makes you fell happy and yet it has the bittersweetness that everyone can relate to. one other nice thing about john mayer is he doesn't have some giant celebrity producing studio standing over him like rihanna or the jonas brothers, the music is very much his, and he is very sincere in his delivery

as a long time JM fan, i've rediscovered the power of this song during a currently tough time in my life. chris - your review is a couple years old now - but i agree totally; this song and 'stop this train' went on repeat in the car today. actually, so did 'say'. also in agreeance with the musicianship comments you made - i hated on john when 'your body is a wonderland' came out, got convinced to go to a show, discovered he's a killer blues guitar player who can do clapton covers justice and has stevie ray vaughn as a hero, and have been a committed fan ever since. despite his recent forays into tabloid exposes, his simple yet meaningful tunes still touch me.
