Plot it out in black and white | Reviewer: GK | 11/13/08

This song really hits home with me. No older person can really understand the reality of high school today. I'm in high school now, but I can remember back in middle school speakers would come to our class and talk about college and scholarships. Back when we were 12 or 13!

I live in a poor community, and basically you don't get to college unless you have a scholarship or a full-time job. My parents, teachers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, ALWAYS stressed how important college is. At the beginning of this year, that was my entire focus. I played tennis, joined two school organizations, did Speech and Debate, took every advanced course i could (each class involved about an hour of homework every night, and i had four classes a day!) and tried to keep a 4.0 GPA (straight A's). All because it looked good on college applications. I tried to balance that with a family life AND spending time with my friends, partying and stuff. And when I got my report card and saw I had one "B" I broke down. I cried thinking about how hard it apparently is to get a good scholarship, and how it's important to go to a great university, and how for the rest of my life I'll be preoccupied with success and money.

And then I thought of this song. I listened to it and I calmed down. There is so much pressure put on teenagers and at such a young age, to grow up and make bank. But listening to this song reminded me that I don't want to be some yuppie, someone who took "the so called right track". I want to be an artist, and even though the best of the best don't make much money, art is what I love. Hearing this song I know I will be alright "as long as I'm alive". I don't think John Mayer meant "alive" in the physical sense, rather the spirtual. As long as you keep your spirit hopeful and happy, you will be okay. But if you allow yourself to be weighed down with bills and expenses and finances and living in "the real world" then you lose. We have to "rise above" the day to day life, and think of something better. I LOVE THIS SONG! MY ANTHEM!! <33

Performance... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/23/08

No matter where he is, John Mayer can perform this song at a 150%. I love this song so much that i played it with the chorus at my high schools graduation. I never saw so many kids in my senior class cry at once. This song has so much meaning that i cannot even write about it. It speaks to everyone and everything. This is one of those songs that you will hear for years and still smile when you listen to that very familiar first few seconds. =D

School's OK too... | Reviewer: Angel | 7/29/08

I am graduating from law school this year. This has been a long journey. A lot of people didn't think I would make it this far. Some people told me I was worthless and I'd never amount to anything. I can't tell you how proud of myself I feel. I am living exaclty as I want to. It's really all about your perspective. If you're coming from a place where eveyrone goes to college or school, and everyone does the same thing and you want to bust out of the rut, then I guess that's what this song means to you. To me it means that I beat everyoes expectations for me and went beyond what was expected of me. the day I found out I was admitted to college I DID run through the halls of my high school screaming at the top of my lungs, I burst into my French class during another class and shouted I got into college! My 20 year high school re-union is in 2 years (trust me folks, you won't believe it went by so fast), and I am NOT old. I'm in my 30's which believe it or not is still very young. I can't wait to walk in there with my head held high and when they ask me what I do I can say I'm an attorney. AND to top it all off, I'm STILL HOT! People mistake me for a 25 or maybe a 27 year old all the time. Not so for a lot of my high school mates. Most people look their age. So basically I'm stoked. Oh and just so you know, I have no idea what I want to do with my law degree. Believe it or not you can still be totally clueless about these things and not fit into the typical mold. I'm not the average type-A personality lawyer. In fact I think they hate me. But I'm having a great life. I meet cool people, and I'm working for a famous musician right now part time and will probably continue working in the entertainment industry after I graduate. I think I have a bright future. So don't go thinking that school a bum rap. I do have an advanced degree. I agree that many times college is not enough now-a-days. I have a lot of college loans to pay back, but even with my debt load, I will earn much much much more money in my lifetime, than 99.9% of the people who graduate from high school and do nothing else, and probably 75% to 80% of the people who graduate from college. I can do whatever I want with all that money. Just ask John Mayer.

High School..... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/30/08

This song actually brings my spirits up when I think about applications, deadlines, finals, money woes, and much more. You only live one life and you should make the best of it. Everybody should be different. That is what I get out of the song......

Little Boxes | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/27/08

So,I'm 57 and I adore John Mayer. Would you also believe I'm an old Pete Seeger fan? Okay, okay' I know what you,re thinking..."Who the H E double hockey sticks is Pete Seeger?" All I can tell you is look him up. Anyways, Pete used to sing a song called "Little Boxes". If you love the message of this song, you'll love the lyrics in "Little Boxes". Also, I'm a big Course in Miracles fan. So I love his lyrics which say "I finally found there is no such thing as the "real world". Just a thing you have to rise above." Pretty gifted for such a very young soul...or maybe not so young. This song makes me think about Nelson Mandela's quote about the awesome capability for TRUE greatness inherent in each of us.

This song is very true. | Reviewer: College Debt Sucks | 4/15/08

Hey kids, if you're in college racking up the debt, work your ass off because that's real money that you're really going to have to repay.
If your folks are floating the bill, then you're very lucky, but a degree these days will only guarantee a job at Starbucks unless you really know your stuff and/or are well connected.
I'm a 25 year old dropout, but have worked very hard to become good at Software Design. FYI, the degree is absolutely not critical to being well employed.

the best of me is still hiding up my sleeve. I'm invincible as long as I'm alive. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/15/08

The point is there is an infinite number of possibilities as to what to do with your life as long as you are alive. Perhaps you will realize something that no one else has and invent something or maybe you will not become famous but you are the one that makes a difference in the lives of those around you. It doesn't matter if you are president or a janitor. You have free will and imagination to find out what brings you the most joy and hopefully that thing will be in your life day in and day out.

an observation | Reviewer: --- | 4/11/08

i'm a freshman in college right now, and a lot of the time i feel lost when it comes to what to do with the rest of my life. to me this song reminds us to stop for a second and see if what we are doing is making us happy. it's so cliche but we do, in fact, only have one life to live. this song reinforces my belief that everything will end up okay. there is no need to be super stressed out all of the time, you'll let a lot of good opportunities and potential good memories pass you by.

In response... | Reviewer: Dre | 3/31/08

"Society, institutions, teachers, parents, politicians, and preachers would have us believe there is a "right" way. Sometimes, an "only way". As if there were one simple answer to complex situations. But one size doesn't fit all. It just doesn't and it never did, yet the myth persists..."
-----------------------------------
I think the real things that 'Society, institutions, teachers, parents, politicians, and preachers' are mostly worried about is that the 'simple way' many involves drugs and potentially orphan kids! While the song is alright, I think you tiny minded kids out there are looking at it like some kind of justification for your life. Not all parents are perfect, and you should study your own parents' for acknowledging their dreams for you.
