It wasn't to say that "There's no such thing as the real world", so much as to say, "There's no such thing as 'The Real World™'". Subtle difference, I know, but it's the key to the entire piece. It's not just an empty boast, but a rejection of the prescribed, single-minded, would-be "real world" of teachers and authority figures. He does still seem to truly and positively believe in "something better"--just not the meted-out "right track".
