The Reviews about No Such Thing (page 3/ 6)
------ performed by John Mayer

Life beyond High School? YES! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/29/08

This is an inspirational song for those who are in their junior or senior years in high school (and others) who realize that there is indeed, life beyond staying between the lines of conformity in high school. For those of you who read into the lyrics too deeply, write your reviews elsewhere.

The comment "No Such Luck | Reviewer: mommy&IR1" is really useless.
Your argument is based on the point that getting a degree is the best thing for anyone. Sure it may provide some degree of financial security, but then again, it might not. And although some people want to be professionals at whatever, this song isn't about anarchy and quitting school.
This song is about making you own path and understanding that NO ONE has a 'right way'. We can only look at other people and decide for ourselves what our own path should be.

I don't care if you or anyone else has such and such socially prescribed degree. Life is not about being a 'productive member of society'. It's about living, your own way, w/o the influence of those who are appointed 'authority' by social constructs of fear and shame.

Fresh Perspective | Reviewer: tim | 1/13/08

I've listened to this song many times and just recently HEARD the line, " I just found out there's no such thing as the real world, Just a lie you got to rise above.

I thought I mis-heard it because it seemed too profound but on the second pass I realized that I heard correctly.

I'm 42 and I am just now seeing the merit in that line.

Higher education rocks if that's what you need to do in order to fulfill your career goals.

But maybe the bottom line is, "To thine ownself be true."

An amazing song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/4/08

Society, institutions, teachers, parents, politicians, and preachers would have us believe there is a "right" way. Sometimes, an "only way". As if there were one simple answer to complex situations. But one size doesn't fit all. It just doesn't and it never did, yet the myth persists...

Staying inside the lines guarantees nothing. Something's better on the other side alright--on the other side of the so-called right way. And we shouldn't be afraid, because there IS no such thing as the "real world"...it's just lie you've got to rise above.

How true.

I will rise above the nonsense of this world because my inner spirit is too powerful to be defeated or overcome...as long as I'm alive.

At least that's what I took from this song...

yeaaa | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/29/07

obviously he is just saying dont always do what others are doing because its ok to be different and do things the way that pleases you best.

Such Talent | Reviewer: Brandon | 12/22/07

I disagree with some of the comments below. Hes not saying you should quit school and not try your hardest. Hes saying that in life you need to find your own way into the world and find your place as said in the lyrics "theres something better on the other side." He is in my position now. A college student doesnt have a clue where he will be in 10-15 years. But I know that I will make it and at that high school reunion tell everyone that i made a difference since then.

No Such Luck | Reviewer: mommy&IR1 | 12/13/07

C'mon kids. This is just more trendy pastiche from a guy whose looks worked on video and lend phony cred to his pedestrian rantings. Go ahead, neglect your plans because you've been "inspired" by this specious pap. Then, when your 10-year high school reunion rolls around, you can impress all your friends who earned graduate degrees with the way you "kept it real" by strumming your cheap guitar and working at Starbucks.

FANTASTIC | Reviewer: Pong Pakorn | 11/26/07
