The Reviews about Daughters (page 12/ 13)
------ performed by John Mayer

i agree with most.
some of you have missed the point to this very positive song.
i'm not sure what the rest of the verses say,
but i'm guessing it all has to do with the 1st- the one i understand most..
it is about raising your kids properly.
in the verse, he totally digs the very special girl, but she's a headcase,
and he's come to a conclusion that maybe it's not his fault that she's a bit wacky..

Wonderful lyrics! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/20/05

I just really listened to this song for the first time just now. I had to look up the lyrics so I could read them and appreciate them. I am really astonished by the bad reviews stating the song is sexist or twisted. First of all, being a "lover" involves much more than just sex (or at least it should!). I think it is the emotional support and caring aspects of the relationship that Mayer is referring to, not that he is pleading for fathers to make their daughters better lovers in the physical sense. Also, I really do not think Mayer is stereotyping women as just lovers and mothers. I am much more than that, but I will state that I am lucky enough to be both and am very proud. I believe that the song is just asking that people in the roles of parents be good to their daughters, because a woman's love can enrich so many lives, which in turn will enrich more lives. And he hit the nail on the head by stating that love is learned from parents and caregivers early in life. A fact so simple but so often forgotten. Great song.

Neither senseless nor creepy | Reviewer: Sophia | 1/14/05

I think serveral people have missed the point. This song isn't limiting daughters/lovers/mothers. Who's the sexist if you assume a lover and a mother might not also be an nuclear physiscist? What he's talking about is breaking cycles of pain and abuse:

Kids are abused
They abuse their lovers
Lovers abuse other lovers
Have and abuse kids
etc...

so no, "be good to your daughters" and they'll be good to thier lovers (and also know that they don't deserve abuse) and good to their own kids, and break the cycle.

I personally have a very fullfilling carrer, but when I'm 90, is it that that's going to make me look back on my life with peace, or the love I recieved, shared, and gave, to my parents, lovers, and children? Come on guys. Feminism doesn't room femininity.

Is "Cheesy and Sexist" joking? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/12/05

Does anyone else think that society would be better without trouble makers like "Cheesy and Sexist." Granted its pretty clear C&S lives a rather unhappy life if they can flip out over such a positive song.

Christ, take a walk in a park, look at a painting, do some charity work, something, because if this is your general outlook on life, you don't disserve one. Plenty of other people more disserving of a life lose theirs and here you are wasting yours.

And if you are going to use people like Oprah as examples, why not use the same thing that got her to where she is…..Intelligence….

different thoughts | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/12/05

I love this song and john mayer. i had heard the song on the radio and instantly fell in love with it. it wasnt quite sure what is was about at first but then i realized it. "girls become lovers who turn into mothers", "she's cleaning up the mess he made", i think it has to do with the changes in a woman and teen pregnancy. the song can be interpreted differently so i dont know if many people will agree with it. and by the way his raspy voice is who he is and its awesome.

different perspective | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/1/05

This song makes me want to have my dad listen to it because maybe then he would realize some of the mistakes he's made as a father without me having to point them out.

great song | Reviewer: mojo | 1/4/05

again awesome song. to the writer "cheesy and sexist" please put down the feminist guard down and really listen to the song...its not an over view on how women should be or be treated or how sucessful they should be. (Sorry, oprah is not the best example).....im a woman, mother, wife and had a father who loved me...in turn that love helped me to learn and pass that love unto my daughter......thats what the songs about...john sings about boys and how they love, but its not as deep and defined as girls...i would think this song is an acknowlegement of how awesome women can love...too bad you missed the point.

Cheesy and Sexist | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/30/04

Is he kidding with this song? Boys are strong, but girls are so emotionally weak and need to be treated with the most delicate care as possible? And not every woman needs or wants to become a mother (successful case in point: Oprah.) What is his next song going to be..."If A Woman Has a Man's Love, Why Does She Need To Vote?" Ugh.

Perfection to my Daughter from her boyfriend (Mike and Wendy) | Reviewer: Beverly | 12/26/04

This song has classic beauty. This is the kind of song a New husband sings to his new wife. I always think of my daughter and the voice of John Mayer sounds like my daughters boyfriend would sound like if he could sing. This is a *****(5star)song. Don't stop playing it. I miss my daughter who lives in Alaska and this brings my close to her. MAMA G

Mayer is not that bad | Reviewer: kitkath | 12/23/04

The first review brought to my attention a different point of view of the song. However I think Mayer intended the song to be a dedication to how much effort goes into raising your children and how much they will appreciate it when they grow up. It is a beautiful piece of music. His voice may be "raspy" but he is portraying true emotion through his voice and the lyrics. John Mayer is liked by many because of this talent of expressing what he's feeling through his singing. This song is no exception.
