The Reviews about Daughters (page 11/ 12)
------ performed by John Mayer

I sit in the car 40 minutes a day (more than 3 hours a week) and I hear songs with lyrics that don't have any true meaning and feeling to them. So when I heard this one, I was touched.

When you grow up in life with your parents arguing constantly, you learn to argue yourself. And now that I am 26, married with a one year old daughter, I can see where many of the hard times and insecurities I've had with my husband originated. At 26, it is very hard to find a new way of thinking, knowing that the old way was wrong. But I have a family now and if I want my daughter to be happy, I can't be like my parents.

Daughters is very much about parenting, something we fail to recognise as the most important factor in each person well being.

I don't get excited about listening to John drone about good common sense and being a loving parent. Yes the lyrics are great - but the drone is just too much. Sincerely, still edgie but loving at 45.

If you do not see the value in this song you are only looking for negative aspects. No one song addresses every aspect of a particular issue, but the way that John Mayer addresses and articulates his view on this one aspect of how we raise our daughter, respond to our sisters and love our wives is simply amazing. He is extremely insightfull.

Interpretation is personal | Reviewer: David | 2/23/05

I'm a 60 year old guy and when I first heard this song I was blown away by the melody and Mayer's different sound on the record. Like a poem, we all can have different ideas of what is being said, some positive and some negative. I don't care if some folks don't like the song - I personally really enjoy it - the sound as well as the lyrics. It does, for me, touch on our relationships with our children, and how everything we do impacts their development. I don't know what Mayer says about his song, but it sure makes me smile whenever I hear it!

The world still surprises me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/15/05

i find it ridiculous that there are so many people who cannot seem to understand the message that John Mayer is conveying through his song 'Daughters'. Only a few seemed to catch that the song is about properly raising your children so that they understand how they are to be treated by their future lovers and how to treat their children. Given that the song is only four minutes long, its very much impossible to touch on the professional goals that a girl may have, and so that aspect is omitted, but not forgotten.

Say what you want about John Mayer's voice, you might not like it, but one would think that you wouldnt be coming to a website looking for the lyrics and then posting messages about an artist that you find has a simply annoying voice.

This song is phenomenal. If you cannot seem to understand the greatness John Mayer has created musically, or through simply reading his lyrics, maybe you need to go back to high school and learn to read for more than just content, but also the implied.

Hit It Right On The Head! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/31/05

As a 38-year-old mother of two young, impressionable daughters, a friend to many grown-up daughters, and a daughter myself, I can attest to the reality of these lyrics. Without discounting the importance of a kind, understanding and PRESENT mother, the base point is that for young girls, by and large, the way they are treated by their fathers is crucial to how they expect to be treated by most men. This model is the one they will use as they go through life forming relationships with others, especially men. There are exceptions to every rule, and thank God that some can escape the terrible quiet ramifications of abuse, but when girls are broken down with words or actions by the "god and the weight of their world" they are taught that this can be an acceptable way to be treated by their partners.
So Fathers Be Good To Your Daughters strikes a chord with me, especially when I think that my girls will probably choose a life with a guy who talks to them like their Dad does. If they go into their teen years and adulthood with a sense of self-confidence and self-worth, it will be because, to a great extent, their father built them up.

came looking for the lyrics just to make sure of what I was hearing. I am so tired of hearing this song over and over again on the radio. No I do not find it in anyway insightful or respectful toward our daughters. I feel much is missing in his understanding of the total role that women play in our society as individuals. I feel just the opposite is true with this song in pointing out only the sexual being of female children. There is more to being a woman than motherhood.

i agree with most.
some of you have missed the point to this very positive song.
i'm not sure what the rest of the verses say,
but i'm guessing it all has to do with the 1st- the one i understand most..
it is about raising your kids properly.
in the verse, he totally digs the very special girl, but she's a headcase,
and he's come to a conclusion that maybe it's not his fault that she's a bit wacky..

Wonderful lyrics! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/20/05

I just really listened to this song for the first time just now. I had to look up the lyrics so I could read them and appreciate them. I am really astonished by the bad reviews stating the song is sexist or twisted. First of all, being a "lover" involves much more than just sex (or at least it should!). I think it is the emotional support and caring aspects of the relationship that Mayer is referring to, not that he is pleading for fathers to make their daughters better lovers in the physical sense. Also, I really do not think Mayer is stereotyping women as just lovers and mothers. I am much more than that, but I will state that I am lucky enough to be both and am very proud. I believe that the song is just asking that people in the roles of parents be good to their daughters, because a woman's love can enrich so many lives, which in turn will enrich more lives. And he hit the nail on the head by stating that love is learned from parents and caregivers early in life. A fact so simple but so often forgotten. Great song.

Neither senseless nor creepy | Reviewer: Sophia | 1/14/05

I think serveral people have missed the point. This song isn't limiting daughters/lovers/mothers. Who's the sexist if you assume a lover and a mother might not also be an nuclear physiscist? What he's talking about is breaking cycles of pain and abuse:

Kids are abused
They abuse their lovers
Lovers abuse other lovers
Have and abuse kids
etc...

so no, "be good to your daughters" and they'll be good to thier lovers (and also know that they don't deserve abuse) and good to their own kids, and break the cycle.

I personally have a very fullfilling carrer, but when I'm 90, is it that that's going to make me look back on my life with peace, or the love I recieved, shared, and gave, to my parents, lovers, and children? Come on guys. Feminism doesn't room femininity.
