Lennon at his most bitter? | Reviewer: Alex | 6/8/07
Although my Beatle's exposure is sadly lacking, i was surprised by the scathing nature of this song, its rawness, with lines like 'learn to smile while you kill/like the folks on the Hll' & 'They drug you with religion & sex & TV" and most surprisingly, "Your still fucking peasants as far as i can see."
Call me sheltered, but growing up with nothing but golden oldies and the fab fours most accessible commerical works, it was came as a bit of a jolt hearing a bonified Beatle using the F word; up until now my idea of John Lennon was the common gentle peacenik "imagine' John Lennon. Its good to see the some of the guy's more caustic nature emerge and i look forward to hearing more of his solo work.
(I have to admit to loving the Greenday cover. It just sounds more jaded and pissed than the slightly hopeful tint of John's interpretation.Too bad it was premiered on 'American Idol'.)

"They don't write songs the way they use to write them", I remember my Mom often saying. And now I heard these very same words come from my own mouth as I was trying to explain the song, it's meaning (to me anyway), and just what a favorite it has been all of these years, to my son's girlfriend. She stood there what a look that said "so what ?". As if she was really interested in an old fogey song such as this.
