Beautiful lyrics about life. 11/3/12 | Reviewer: Sam Adams | 10/27/12

The things I like and appreciate most about John Denver's music is that most of his songs tell a story about life. Grandma's Feather Bed, Country Road, Back Home Again, and so many more including my favorite, Matthew. Matthew stikes a cord in everyone's life who has ever faced any adversity and over came it through their faith in God almighty. I find myself humming and singing this song all the time because it's so beautiful. It was a shame we lost such a talented singer and song writter so young; I miss him.

This song was written by John Denver as a tribute to his uncle, Aaron Dean Deutschendorf. They worked together on a wheat harvesting crew in the summer of 1960, just months before Dean's death in a car accident. They cut wheat near Colby, Kansas, among other locations. Although raised on a farm in Oklahoma, Dean had that sense of joy and a love for fun that John wrote about.

Is this song OK for dogs? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/24/11

I have always enjoyed this number. It reminds me of my son Gerald. I had wanted to name him Matthew, but his domineering father would not allow it. Recently, however, while listening to the song our pet chihuahua Toodles had a violent reaction and I can't help but think that all the vomiting and seizures were caused by the music. Has anyone else had this happen? My vet told me this was impossible, but I'm not so sure. I have heard that JD was abusive towards his wife and I think Toodles can sense that. I mean, sure he wrote some decent songs, but is that truly the measure of a man? Not as far as Toodles is concerned. And I'm inclined to agree.

One of my favorite songs of all time | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/20/11

I am a 67 year old grandma, but of all the songs I've heard in my life, "Matthew" is one of my very favorite. The guitars are fabulous, the tune and lyrics to the song very meaningful. I LOVE THIS SONG and play it over and over without stopping.

Triumph of faith over disaster | Reviewer: Peter Overton | 11/13/08

Until now I had not realised that this song was written by John Denver's uncle Dean. It is really one of the most poignant of all JD's songs. For anyone with their roots in farming and the soil, this sad but triumphant ballad strikes to the very heart. I have met people like Uncle Matthew in communities all over the world - people whose religious outlook on life, and enjoyment of simple pleasures, form the bedrock of our civilisation. Anyone who thinks they are more important than the next man, sophisticated, above the crowd, then sing this song and remember that no prince, king or president can rise above the lowliest amongst us when faced with great adversity. A beautiful simple ballad and one of the best amongst many fine songs produced by JD
