Review of "Won't You Try -Saturday Afternoon" | Reviewer: cjay | 2/24/09
From one of the most psychedelic albums to come from the halcyon days of the sixties, the closing medley of "Won't You Try -Saturday Afternoon", an incredible production which truly communicates the feeling and experience of being there in Golden Gate Park, on that January day in 1967, "The Human Be-In, Meeting Of The Tribes", or for that matter, most any laid-back afternoon in that short period of time before the external aspects of the counter-culture collapsed under pressure from outside forces, as well as from within.
Starting with "Two Heads", a highly complex song dealing with short scenes illustrating the more difficults aspects of inner exploration, the heaviness lifts, like parting clouds, and glides into "Won't You Try", an optimistic and uplifting space filled with hope and hip advice ("find a way to need someone and the sunshine will set you free", the 'sunshine' of course, referring to the legendary brand of LSD which circulated freely thru the late 60's). "Saturday Afternoon" enters, as if another separate song, and the two songs interleave from then on, til the end of the medley.
The entire album ('After Bathing At Baxters') is a beautiful ride thru the many facets of tripping the light fantastic with the substance of choice back then - possibly one of the few ways to try and get an insight as to what it was like to be young, curious, and high in the sixties. It is suggested to find the originl CD release, without the 'bonus' tracks, slip it into the cd player on a quiet morning, turn off all your i-toys, and let it take you back to a freer and more hopeful time, and maybe, it will work its magic on you too. Won't you try?
