The Reviews about White Rabbit (page 21/ 28)
------ performed by Jefferson Airplane
A common misunderstanding | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/17/07
Alice in wonderland is not reference to drugs or anything of the sort. It was inspired by Alice Pleasance Liddell, and her sisters. He had told them a story in which they enjoyed it. So no, he wasn't referencing drugs, and it doesn't sound like the song is either.
Also, the doorknob was not a character in Carrol's version, Disney added that.
Agreement with Michael | Reviewer: Victoria | 10/16/07
I agree with you Michael. Those were the times, the war was going on and there was a lot of people against it. So, of course there was going to be a song about that.
Anyway, I do think it is a great song if you can think out of the box.
Y'ALL SURE ABOUT THAT??? | Reviewer: Michael | 10/14/07
OK, a few things here:
It IS "Dormouse". that's directly from Alice and Wonderland - one of the characters from the Tea Party, along with the Hatter and so on. I'll get back on this.
Also, all this speculation about the song's topic is wrong I think. The whole song is s reference to the Vietnam War. Take note of the lines:
"And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall"
Referring to going off to kill, and getting killed yourself. Rabbits are the Vietnamese.
"Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call"
That means you've been DRAFTED into the army and sent to Vietnam to fight. "The call" is the DRAFT.
"When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go"
This is the government or army, engaged in their "Chess Game" which is a metaphor for War. "They tell you where to go" meaning they send you to war, basically as living pawns in their chess game for Vietnam.
OF course the drug metaphors are there, but notice how there are being used. The War is basically compared to having a really bad trip, an experience any young person of that time could readily relate to:
"When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead"
Comparing the sheer insanity of warfare to a really bad trip - note the violent metaphor also!
"And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!" "
So essentially nothing makes sense about war, it is madness. Once again, notice aother violent metaphor, the blodthirsty Red Queen ordering Alice's beheading.
The final line "feed your head" does seem to be a reference to taking drugs to expand your mind. It is being prescribed as a response to the war actually, and at that time it was a big part of the anti-Vientam War movement.
Any thoughts?
Here's what the song is about... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/12/07
It's making fun of parent's who let their kids see and read Alice and Wonderland, a book where the main character uses mind-affecting drugs; and are surprised that their kids are using psychedelic drugs like LSD and marijuana.

White Rabbit.... | Reviewer: Nick | 9/27/07
Fran i dont think the song is mocking fairy tales, its a reference to Alice in Wonderland which was based on a hallucinagenic experience and is closely linked to the counter culture. i do agree with alot of the other stuff you said and just so you know, your right about most young people now-a-days. but dont worry, thee are a few of us who actually are trying to change things. There still people who live by the phrase "Turn on, tune in, and drop out" and i couldnt be more proud to be one of them.
White Rabbitt | Reviewer: mike | 9/24/07
First of all, this song is the first to ever sneak lyrics about drugs into a song, even though its supposedly about Alice In Wonderland.
Secondly Fran,Grace Slick wasnt married, she was in a relationship with 2 different members of Jefferson Airplane, one of which, she had a child by,though they both agreed they neither wanted to marry.

amanita muscaria. those red with white spots mushrooms. it's a common mistake to take a related mushroom of the amanita species thats poision. very nasty cns failure. the mushroom also had a big impact on christmas of all things. its actually why santa's suit is red and white as opposed to the original green tunic looking suit. I do have to say im glad i don't see any references to oscar acosta in the bathtub telling hunter s thompson to toss the radio in the tub when the rabbit bites its own head off....
reply to alex about McCarthy | Reviewer: brad stanton | 9/20/07
Alex, if you have ever lived in a communist country like I did you would realize that McCarthy was a great man. Communism was taking one country after another for many years. Look at a map made in 1979. Most of Asia was communist. I lived in China and talked to many who were jailed because they had a college degree or because their political or religious beliefs were different than the communist doctrine. Many were jailed just because they associated with people from America or other western countries. Children were encouraged to rat out their parents, and after doing so, many killed themselves out of guilt. Millions of people were killed by communist dictators. What is good about communism? Nothing!!
