I remember being in major discussions on the subject of what "feed your head" meant and how subversive that simple phrase was. It challenged a whole societal framework that denied any value to expanding consciousness in any way. Truth be told, there was a universally hostile governmental attitude, reflected in the populace and particularly the "established" populace, that opening one's mind to anything other than the anti-philosophical religious and political pablum that we had been all fed from infancy was a major act of rebellion, such that those who spent time in thought, were un-American and subversively dangerous. These anxiety-ridden fears flowed straight out of the McCarthy anti-communism days of the 50's, which were straight-lined from their earliest Puritanical origins of the Salem witch hunts and trials. Remember, those "afflicted" with witchcraft in Salem were actually (so say the scientists who have studied these events) under the influence of their staple baked good: rye bread infected with the rye ergot fungus-mold, which curiously and coincidentally contains the fundamental chemical precursor for LSD-25: Lysergic Acid. Feed your head!
