Grace said "lather" was made to Spencer, but from different points of views it may represent many many and many very deep meanings. I think everyone have an own meaning about this song.
Sorry gramatical mistakes, bye.
Lather Has 'Legs' | Reviewer: dagger | 7/19/07
"Lather" may be the finest lyric Grace wrote, and stands as one of the Classic American Songbook. It will be in print 75 years from now. It has "legs".
It is overtly about a mentally retarded boy, but is also making multiple statements about happiness, respect for life, Goodness, decency, etc. A remarkable work for such a young writer. Moreover, I know of no other song that attempts to address the subject. "Luka", by Suzanne Vega is a fine song, but is simply not in the same class. "Lather" stands alone on a high pedestal. It’s an odd thought, but I suspect Stephen Sondheim is partial to this song. I wouldn’t be surprised if it raised Johnny Mercer’s eye-brows. Joni Mitchell is probably still cursing and wishing that she had written the song! It is a humbling lyric for any songwriter.
Lather's deeper meaning.. ?!? | Reviewer: Ozzy | 7/5/07
I think the song is to be seperated in three parts the first part is about lather as a child, the second verse is about when lather is 27 years old and has joined the army, the third verse is about lather as a 30 year old veteran who is mentally ill
correct me if i'm wrong but it sounds just logical to me.
Ill be 30 on 6/8 | Reviewer: Lather | 4/10/07
I always knew i was named after this song
mental illness | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/17/06
I think this song is about mental illness "lather comes foam from his tongue" sounds like hypersalivation, a side effect of some neuroleptic drugs.
One of their finest | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/24/06
This is a song from their old range, not the later electronic stuff.
And it's one of the finest. It's druggy, surrealistic and brilliant.
Lather | Reviewer: gotpp | 7/22/05
It is a great song! I have always liked it even when I was 16 and young.
Now I am 53 and I know I am older and I am reminded of this song more often
now that I see it is true that I am no longer young.
This song is like a lot of us that do not want to grow up and maybe even fear it.
