Dear ' Check Wikapedia ' | Reviewer: Miss.AmandaRose | 5/9/09
Okay ... First off wikapedia is the -shall I say worst?- search engine ever , Any dumbass can put his/her oppinion on wikapedia , so the information you are getting from there could be 100 % false for all you know. second thing "People love to assign hidden meanings to things because it makes them feel like they have some sort of special knowledge, even when there is no special meaning there. For example: the idiots who think "Puff the Magic Dragon" was about pot or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was about LSD." You said this as a sucker punch to the other reveiwer ,And hey brainiac , What do you think those songs are about ? Puff the magic dragon ? do you think he accually has a pet dragon ? O.o Haha , you probly do , and you probly got that info from wikapedia .
.....but Roger Miller was no Pat Boone | Reviewer: Monica Crump | 2/18/09
"Check Wikipedia" says the lyrics aren't drug references because Roger Miller wasn't into heroin. True, he was too busy tweaking on speed to bother with heroin. When his drummer was asked when the last time Miller had slept was, he said "Can't really say, I've only worked for him for 3 years".
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds | Reviewer: Rob | 2/8/09
To the reviewer who's name is Check WIkipedia- "...Lewisohn goes on to say "there can be little doubt that this was the very substance [LSD] that provoked such colourful word imagery to flow out of Lennon's head and onto paper." McCartney agrees in a 2004 interview, where he noted that Julian's painting had inspired the song, but that it was "pretty obvious" that the song was also inspired by LSD." That's a quote from Wikipedia haha
Harpoon is another name for a Harmonica | Reviewer: Tampagirl | 2/8/09
The harmonica is called many different names: mouth organ, mouth harp, Hobo Harp, French harp, Reckless Tram, harpoon, tin sandwich, blues harp, Mississippi saxophone, or simply harp. When Kris sang this song it is accompanied by a harmonica. It is a unique pop culture tribute to Janis' legend that we can also interpret it as a hypodermic needle - what killed her. That is the beauty of the poetry of this song - each person has his/her own interpretation. I am sure future generations will have oher interpretations. Nonetheless it remains one of the most special songs - EVER.
Not heroin, harmonica | Reviewer: check wikipedia | 1/30/09
The first person to record the song was Roger Miller. Not exactly a heroin-shooting kind of guy. It was written by Kris Kristofferson, a bit of an iconoclast, but not quite the drug user Joplin was. People love to assign hidden meanings to things because it makes them feel like they have some sort of special knowledge, even when there is no special meaning there. For example: the idiots who think "Puff the Magic Dragon" was about pot or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was about LSD.
What a harpoon is | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/19/08
A harpoon is a long spear-like instrument used in fishing to catch fish or other large aquatic animals such as whales. It accomplishes this task by impaling the target animal, with the fishermen then using the a rope or chain attached to the butt of the projectile to draw the creature in. A harpoon can also be used as a weapon.
Good Ol' Times | Reviewer: jad | 7/17/08
I quoted her in my high school yearbook! In the era before the internet, do you believe that we actually had to LOOK UP info about and lyrics from an artist? In a LIBRARY!! Or listen to the song till you were half deaf? I was so frustrated all those years ago, because I couldn't make out what she was saying about freedom. But I knew I agreed and wanted it in my yearbook photo. I ended up going with a less difficult-to-acquire quote of hers. Had I had the internet back then, it wouldn't have been a problem!
listen to kris kristofferson's version... | Reviewer: jason | 1/19/08
as the original, his version is very country and so states that it is a country song before he starts singing. then as he sings 'harpoon'...a harmonica starts 'blowing sad' when 'bobby starts singing the blues'.
it is pretty hard to read the referenced 'harpoon' to be anything but a harmonica.
to mistake it as a hypodermic needle and heroin isn't the furthest thing as janis loved smack and died shortly after recording her version from it. it is also easy to assume that it 'could' be a hypodermic needle as her version has no harmonica music in it...like kris kristofferson's did (who wrote the song).
he wrote it | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/3/08
Kris wrote the song about a fucking secretary he was fucking. The harmonica theory seems to be the most likely but to know for sure you would have to ask Mr. Kris.
brilliant | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/24/07
Bloody great song, it suprises me how much great music I find from that era, even though I listen to that era often, its like an endledd goldmine, people singing with feeling, although I have no idea what the lyrics mean, possibly coz im not american...
