When you listen to a jack Johnson song it'll either make you really happy and glad to be alive or it'll make you realize a hard truth that you didn't want to face. Most of the time it's the happy one for me but after years of listening to this song I guess I've grown up and this song has shown me that I just need to go for that girl ive always liked because if I wait nothing is gonna change. So thanks jack and this is great song!!

Women arent pets that need someone... ALL people need someone.
And he's right in saying somethings are so bent you cant fix them with time because there is no going back. You are naiive to think you can live life without letting anyone in. Especially in this case when he wanted to share his life with her. Ever heard a song that goes "everybody needs somebody to love" well its true and he needs someone but he can't be expected wait around for someone who won't let him be there for her.

I think the song is about a relationship he's had with a girl who never really let him in or trusted him completely and they ended up breaking up because of it.
when he talks about her eyes not letting him in its like she would never allow them to connect on a really deep level and she never let him in 100%
at the start when he says "if i had eyes at the back of my head, i would have told you that you looked good as i walked away" i think he means that he's always let her in, even after they had broken up and he goes onto say that she never did the same back.

Beautiful song but it's all wrong. That is I think I disagree | Reviewer: JMB | 7/11/08

Great tune and I feel J.J. is currently one of the greatest lyricists out there. Though everyone will have their own perspective, in reflecting on "If I Had Eyes", I tend to feel perhaps the enriching environment in which J.J. grew up so far removed from the sufferings experienced in basic survival has left him a bit naiive in some matters. Women are not destined to be pets who should need to trust another person for their survival. They need to fall and get back up until they can stand on their own. So while I feel J.J.'s lyrics are typically insightful, I must argue that time is healing. Further, I believe less judging and blaming and more compassion, respect, acceptance and forgiveness would make a difference. Holding on can make us feel strong but often the true strength is in letting go.
