The Reviews about Jezebel (page 2/ 4)
------ performed by Iron & Wine

perhaps | Reviewer: Leigh | 9/4/08

When I first heard this song I interpreted it as being about a daughter named jezebel who died...To me it seems like when he says, "Wait, we swear we'll love you more" I get the image of his baby daughter going toward heaven and the parents begging her to stay. Also the part where he says, "who's seen jezebel?
she was born to be the woman we could blame
make me a beast half as brave" it seems like he was saying she was born to make him a softer man. and then in the next line he says, "who's seen jezebel?
she was gone before i ever got to say lay here my love." Like perhaps she was taken from them too soon. maybe maybe :)

High Priestess | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/16/08

Interestingly enough, in researching for a paper I discovered that Jezebel would have actually been the high priestess of the Baal Melqart cult, and as such was very powerful... not that it really has any bearing on the interpretation of the song, I just think it is interesting.

To the reader from 8/4/07 who mentioned Such Great Heights, I just want to point out for accuracy's sake that S.G.H. is actually a The Postal Service song that Sam Beam just covered, it's not his song. it's still a fantastic song though.

The Spiritual Masculine/Femine | Reviewer: Jobbera | 2/29/08

My take on this song is that it is a new commentary in the original notion behind the story of Jezebel, the woman who led men away from the Judaic God to the pagan god Baal.

Basically, I think that the masculine aspect of God is often seen as ethereal/abstract and intellectual where as the feminine is life giving, earth/physical.

I think that this song is a poem that recognizes the two are complements, not opposites. For instance, when he says "you're the only shape I'll pray to" he references the fact that the feminine is form - shape, and that is not incompatible with the non-formed / shapeless nature of God...

At least that's my take... It is a wonderful tension

Jezebel | Reviewer: Mersault | 2/28/08

Although i'm not totally confident of this i believe, contrary to most posters, that this is not JUST about a man who couldnt take care of a 'jezebel' but about a girl who was a 'jezebel' as she believed promises of love and care from those who did not actually love and care for her and the narrator singing the song feels he truely does care for her but it is perhaps too late.

I appreciate this was poorly written, sorry :/

I absolutely love Sam Beam's amazing song writing abilities, I found the song Jezebel on
a friend of my brother's myspace page and from then on Iron & Wine is all I've been listening to, great stuff.

my opinion. | Reviewer: jenni | 8/21/07

to me..this song obviously has the biblical sense, but to me, its about a man, who does truly love her, but he isn't man enough to take care of her, but hey, what would i know, im just a kid

Simply profound. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/4/07

I find it ironic that Such Great Heights chronicled the better half of the most deep and tormented relationship of my life and now this song from the very same minds sums it all up with flawless closure. That was years ago, and yet as I listen to Jezebel now the nostalgia returns strongly enough to move me to tears.

Incredible stuff...
