The "pins and needles" reference is a metaphor for his painful realization about the girl he was involved with at the time, and the direction the relationship was going in, which was nowhere. He was on a plane and his arm fell asleep because he was leaning on it. When he got the pins and needles sensation on his arm days later, he was also realizing that he was ready to call it quits with his girlfriend. He has talked about all this in interviews. The lyrics are brilliant ways of describing coming to realizations, finally, and how a sense of perspective can really make such a big difference to finally understanding the way things really are. "To obtain a bird's eye (view) is to turn a blizzard to a breeze." What a great line! It's so insightful. Taking that big step back in order to gain perspective changes shit that seems so huge and overwhelming into something so much more insignificant in the larger picture.
