Why does love as a verb have to mean sex? A kiss is a physical form of love, therefore a verb. I think he means he finally found a kind of girl that can show him love instead of just saying "I love you" over and over again. Those words tend to me nothing after a while.

Its not about sex. Love is a verb here in my room...think about that for a minute. You don't make 'love' with someone you meet at a party. You screw them. I am not even attempting to say that is an entirely bad thing either, but that sort of spontaneous relief has nothing to do with love, its biology. Trust me, men don't even associate that scary word with a one night stand, do you boys?
His world is gray and boring and mundane.
He sees her and suddenly there is light, there is color.
And there is hope for us all....

The thing is, there is so much to this song. You can't really read it on only one level. I do think that on the surface, the scenario is what happens at a party between a guy and a girl. But the story is told from the POV of a guy who is obviously very lonely and insecure, doesn't have a lot of confidence. He's also pretty fed up with the usual bullshit, friends who are superficial and sheep-like, lacking real individuality. The girl fills a need, even though we have the sense that it might well be just a one-night stand. It almost doesn't matter, because for that brief time together, they really are creating something meaningful and real. I find this song so incredibly poignant. There is so much raw need in the words. "Love is a verb" is a brilliant lyric. It conveys so much-- the transience and brevity of the physical act of love, something bittersweet under such conditions as the song tells about, and yet, it's beauty too. I think this is what Brandon Boyd wants us to come away with. Incubus is amazing!
Thank you for being that kind of girl | Reviewer: Tamix! | 12/29/08
I've always thought about that part of the song, and have being a bit confused. As I'm not a native english speaker, I thought nobody else had this trouble, but now I see I'm not alone.
First of all, this is a song that has very strong elements that indicate sex, "love is a verb here in my room" is the strongest. But my real doubt is if "that kind of girl" means being an "easy girl" or a special girl, just for being different and fill his life with color. Wish Brandon cuould answer me!! :(
great song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/17/08
I no everyones got different opinions about what this song is about and i dont want to get into a debate about it but yea im sure some of this song you can take at face value, it is about sex its like when you meet a girl for the first time at this party, or she comes into your circle of friends and she seems so much better than where your at right now. 'this party is old an uninviting'seems more to me about a clicky group of friends that your tired with doing the same thing every weekend or whatever. The way incubus write is by using metaphores and similies to make feelings that might seem a bit lame or cheesy cooler and poetic... thats why they're my favourite band

I agree with the two people below me.
because I read it..and really started to think about it and they are seriously right. It's happened to me before..And the emotion he puts in it just really makes you have that feeling..

Now, I'm sure all us can agree this has a little to do with sex. BUT. I think that YES some of this song is about straight up sex, the pink tractor beam into your incision is a little hard to argue against BUT I also think as a whole this song is in fact about someone who changed a man of mundane and brought him into a per say fast life. Not to say a life of drugs and stuff but the first few lines:
This party is old and uninviting
Participants all in black and white.
This party is old and uninviting
Participants all in black and white.
You enter in full blown technicolor
Nothing is the same after tonight.
If the world were to fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here
If the world were to fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here
- really lend to the idea that day after day, week after week, life get's into a grey and boring rhythm. and the section "You enter in full blown technicolor
Nothing is the same after tonight." shows that this song is NOT about some little skank. If it was some boring little skank who just had sex with him and then was gone/meaningless why would things not be the same? I think there is varying levels of gray to this song, and is a little of both worlds.
I love this song. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/2/08
don't have such a closed mind about this song. I thoroughly believe that it is not about some sexual encounter at a party. Taking things at face value is very black and white. Sure, you could take it that way, but I agree completely with the comment below mine.
For those of you who think otherwise, try thinking like an artist. Read between the lines.

I don't think the song is about some meaningless sexual encounter. To me it's about a guy who's living a bland and unexciting life ... suddenly he meets a girl who completely changes his perspective ("nothing is the same after tonight," "show me the world as seen from the stars," "I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here"). The song is definitely very sexual, but some of the lines, particularly those I quoted, make me feel as though it's more than just an awesome and unexpected screw at a boring party.
I never interpreted "that kind of girl" to mean an easy girl who puts out. I took it to mean the kind of girl who briefly, unforgettably, and no-questions-asked, pulls you out of the mundaneness of your life.
I get it now | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/5/08
I've been listening to A Crow Left of The Murder for months now and this song has always been my least favorite song. Today I had an epiphany and discovered it's real meaning. It's about a really nice guy who never gets the girl. When a girl that's crazy about him has sex with him, he dosn't recognize it as legit and just says "thanks for being that kind of girl".
