I’m secretly on your side | Reviewer: yappy00 | 9/24/12
I feel like most people overlook the key (IMO) line in this song:
"I’m secretly on your side."
Everyone focuses on the elements of conflict, but that's just the surface and not really what the song's about.
Yes, obviously it's centered on Christmas. And obviously it's about those holiday moments we've all experienced with the family: duplicate presents, bickering siblings, blaming each other for forgetting to set the oven timer, awful musical choices, drinking your way through it, and ultimately getting on each other's nerves to the point that you look forward to escaping.
But the point is, "I'm secretly on your side."
Because even though we're bickering over petty squabbles, barely suppressing some sharp remarks, and though we're ALL well aware of how much we can grate on each other ... we're still all family and would ultimately do anything for one other, even if we don't come out and say it.
That's why this song is so poignant.
The older you get, the more your family spreads out, and the less frequently you see each other during the rest of the year... the more you realize just how spot on Ms. Heap is with this song.
more than just family holiday | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/8/10
one of a kind holiday song ~ I.H. keeps it real. correct, the song is obviously about the holidays and her feelings in relation to a family holiday gathering. my take on it, however, is that there is something more to the "hopelessnesses" and the "tears"... specifically, this woman would rather be with the one she really loves - not with the partner that she is spending her holidays with. the described events of the holiday gathering are not, in and of themselves, any terrible things. its more about some surrounding despair that creates the sadness of the song. "get me outta here" - she'd rather be with the one she really loves. she is trying to, "just for now", leave all her "hopelessnesses" aside; she is "secretly on the side" of her lover despite "that time of year".
My all time favorite | Reviewer: Sara Gratton | 7/15/09
Every time that I hear this song, I have to resist the urge to cry. It's very sad, and reminds me too much of my family. (Which has finally crumbled within the past several months, and everyone has gone their seperate ways...)
Holiday gatherings are VERY rough for my family. There's always a lot of fighting, bickering, complaining, nobody is happy - yet we all try to paste on a smile for the day and pretend like we're one happy family.
My brother usually drugs himself to make it through the tough holiday gatherings (if he's not in jail that year, anyway), my sister starts the fights, my mother eggs the fighting on - yet insists we all behave...all the while, I find myself just wishing that I wasn't there, but feeling obligated to be there for the family's sake.
Imogen conveys quite a lot - saying very little. That's not an easy task, but she makes it look as if it is.
Merry Christmas | Reviewer: Alice | 6/6/09
It's christmas time so lets put aside all of our troubles i know it's been a tough year. She gets a present that she has gotten before. A young family member is kicking her under the table. She tells him to stop and he says he didn't know he was kicking her and for her to just shut up. Her mom is telling them to calm down and stop fighting. She is trying to calm down by breathing deeply, biting her tounge, ect. when she smells something burning. It was the Christmas dinner. A family member was trying to stop the smoke alarms from going off. Someof the family starts to sing cheesy christmas carols. She pours some alchohol to numb out the music. Her mom is giving her disaproving looks but she doesn't care. She just wants to ge out of there but just for now she'll have to stay
me and this song have a love/hate relationship | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/18/09
So I have been doing a winterguard routine to this song this year. So trust me I have heard this song about a million times. I love it. Its about the holidays and a family who have been going through a tough time, but if "just for now" on this one day that they are all supposed to be happy they could set it all aside. Sadly, it does not work that way she gets gifts that she obviously got a million times before, they burn the turkey perhaps, and she ends up poring herself another, also the unforgetable ending line "get me outta here".
the meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/19/08
It is about Christmas with family (as is evident by the lines about receiving gifts). A family member has died. Everyone has had a hard time dealing with it ("bumpy ride"), but "tears stop right here" (for this Christmas gathering). A family member (perhaps a grown sibling) is "kicking [her] under the table" to "make her shut up about it" so she doesn't get herself and other upset about it--maybe the mother of grown children is going on about her late husband. The singer (and probably others too) doesn't like the whole situation and wants "outta here" physically, but drinks to escape it emotionally ("pour me another"), a method of coping which is not approved by some family member ("oh, don't wag your finger at me").
Plain and simple.
Something Pevensie-ish | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/22/08
As I read the lyrics and listened to the song after seeing Prince Caspian in a local theater, I couldn't help remembering a certain scene in the early parts of the movie: the one when the four Pevensie kids ran along a shore and splashed water to each other.
It was the one scene that was both warm and made me teary... the feeling of being together and then torn apart.
Alternative Christmas #1 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/30/07
This should be released in a protest to the Christmas no1 (x factor as usual now) It sums up all the bad things that unfortunately Christmas can bring up especially in family gatherings which should be the opposite of what the song shows up. Its a wicked interpretation.
Pour me another, oh don't wag your finger at me (I need to get steamin just to get through this god awful occassion ha ha)
Gifts | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/5/07
i love the irony of xmas she highlights, when you open a gift in front of the person who's given it and it's something rubbish like socks or sumthn, n to be polite u say 'It's what I always wanted,
You can never have too many of these' haha golden song-

*g* when i listen more carefully to that song and when i finally read the lyrics i also thought it was about a christmas or a thanksgiving get together.
but she still did a great job with this song!
Just for now... | Reviewer: Lola | 8/24/07
This song is definitely about a fmily gathering - probably Christmas or a birthday (because of the gift reference), but I think it refers to how difficult emotionally it is to get together with your entire family, with all the history and issues that make up decades of family life, struggle and strife, and how some people just cannot handle these get togethers (Get me outta here.....)
Christmas? | Reviewer: Sereth | 8/18/07
I really think this song is about a christmas get together
"It's that time of year
Leave all our hopelessnesses aside" - Money issues?
"If just for a little while" -Christmas day
"Tears stop right here, I know we've all had a bumpy ride" - buying christmas gifts
xmas | Reviewer: Wes | 7/31/07
@ Pfoofination: yeah I was thinking the same thing about this song... it's about opening presents (just what I wanted, you can never have enough of these) and the xmas dinner burning and stuff... it's awesome, she just wrote down some thoughts and phrases and fitted them into the perfect song everrr... with her sweet as candy voice... it's amazing, and shows a huge talent!
Reminds me of.... | Reviewer: Poket | 7/17/07
My boyfriend, Jeremy...he's in Arkansa, but only for a week, I miss him so much I want to cry when I hear this song! ...it reminds me of him because Ive gone through some stuff in life and Im so glad it all happend and that the "bumpy ride" is a result of me meeting him...I wouldnt trade one thing thats happend for the world.
