the meaning hides and we seek it. just like any poetry, we can make our own interpretations. but really, the true meaning lies within the author. we can appreciate it, that's the much we could do. we percieve the art, we try to put meaning into it.
the song is good, not just the lyrics, but the melody more importantly.

America | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/15/08

I think this song is very deep, and could reflect a number of things, her childhood memories, her being left foranotherwman, but I think it most reflects Americans and how cruel we can be. Americans are very judgemental. You see a bigger person standing on thre street, we automatically assume they are a fast-food junkie, you see a super-skinny girl walking down the street, you assume she's annorexic or bulemic. America and the next generation of kids have a lot to deal with, and parents have no idea of how to prepare their kids, because they had no preperation themselves.

I think this song could mean any of the things the reviewers before me have spectated. I think that's the beauty of it. It ables you to interperate the meaning your own way so you feel the most out of it. It is a truly beautiful song and I find it a shame that it mostly known for the "Dear Sister" parody from SNL. It deserves a better legacy than that. :)

Society | Reviewer: Liz | 7/31/08

I think this song is more about society, and life in general. About how there were other people before us, who had their own lives and families and worlds. Then we come, and just like the people before us, we have to figure out our own lives. It also reflects on the people around us, the people we love, hate, and will never come to meet or get to know. Everyone in society has their own life, and we live them separately. This song reflects on the fact that we will never know what would happen if we truly lived our lives together with the others in the world.

Musical and Lyrical Appreciation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/1/08

First of all I would like to say, Thank you to the directors of the O.C. that decided to use this song in the tragic scene. This song would not have reached the ears of most, and therefore the musical value that this song posesses could not have been appreciated.

Second, This song is full of musical tension which gives the listener a feeling of quivering and sublimity. It is sad, and empowering all at the same time. Musically, the chords send chills up my spine. There is so much tension with the clashing notes and digital construction giving it a really rugged feel. The range of notes and the way they are arranged make for an amazing description of emotions that are felt during situations that are strenuous to the human condition.

The variation of the dynamics provoke the listener to really feel what the artist is saying. The combinations of loud and soft really speak to the frustration and helplessness that one may feel during a crisis in ones life.

The lyrics, i think they reflect the desperate times in life, and how life still goes on outside of your own circle of terror. I also think that it brings to life how cruel the world really is. It seems like she is trying to describe what growing up really is. You slowly begin to feel the hardships of life, and then all of a sudden they hit you like a ton of bricks, and you can't understand how to cope with it. The difficulties and the questions of how and why things are so difficult to deal with, and then the realization that everyone has to be out for ones self.

changing childhood | Reviewer: Nathan | 7/30/08

I think this song means more about her early life as a child. The sudden implication that she has to get up and leave her life, the happy home she did have, and move on to something else. I think the line "Hide and seek, trains and sewing machines" is more symbolic about her parents. Her father was "hiding" which goes along with the train, and her mother was always "seeking" him, staying at home (symbolized by sewing machines)

The mmm what ya say part is a talk to her father, for he was the reason she had to leave. Her discontent of her father leaving the family ( divorce it seems) and them splitting apart the life she did have, gives her remorse and feelings of empty promises ( speak no feeling no i dont believe you)

I think this is one of the most complex, intricate, beautiful songs that has graced this world, and im so very happy i could hear it.

Another Woman | Reviewer: Phillip Lasiter | 7/30/08

I'm inclined to think this song is about her moving out of the home she raised her children in after being left for another woman.

While I love the holocaust analogy and it works mostly, it doesn't explain the one line "Mmmmm what did "she" say. This tells us there is another woman involved. Trains and sewing machines could refer to her life with her children. Also, "They were here first" could refer to the children. I think this is simply a breakup song.

House | Reviewer: julianne... | 7/17/08

idk...at first I thought this was about her parents selling her beloved childhood house...and she talks about the distress she feels as her house empties and her memory-filled house is taken over by strangers...i think the chorus represents her memories of her as a child..her games...her toys...etc...the oily marks on the walls are where her pictures used to hang

I agree with this reviewer below: I also feel firmly it represents the holocaust. The first time I read these words, unfortunately the Holocaust immediately came to mind. If you read each line the you can draw the connections. What a powerful song. It really brings events of the past into the present. Let us never forget.

this song is about the holocaust.
it makes perfect sense when you listen to each and every lyric [and title].
i had been trying to figure out what this song is really about and then it just clicked.
