Hide and Seek | Reviewer: nick | 12/2/10

I used to think this song was mainly about someONE. But the more I have listened to it I think it also has to do with what's going on around us...the sun, the earth, space. Hide and seek...the sun coming out...then hiding...

This isn't about the Holocaust. Here's some proof. | Reviewer: Michael | 12/2/10

This is an excerpt from an interview done with Imogen Heap. The link is posted below.

But I’m asking the question because I figured a lot of people might wonder what the lyrics to Hide and Seek are about?

Well, I’m not going to tell you exactly what it’s about, because I think that part of the reason why it is not so obvious is sometimes it’s good to have those songs that really mean something very dear to you, but maybe you don’t want to speak about it to the rest of the world. But, with that one, I wrote it so quickly, the lyrics I probably wrote in about 20 minutes, which is unheard of. But I like to be clever with words and I like to make them like a puzzle, I like the words to sound interesting in the mouth and create patterns within themselves. So with that one, it just literally came out of nowhere and I found myself getting really passionate about it and it just poured out of me. There was something in my life that obviously needed to be said.

In a broad strokes way, it’s about losing something very dear to me and how much of an impact that person had on my life and about maybe how when something awful happens to somebody else, how other people react to it. It tied in with when I went to see Michael Moore’s Farenheit 911 and I remembered that image of George Bush being told and him completeley carrying on as if nothing had happened. And I just thought that was outrageous, if I was the president I would run out of their and fucking get onto the TV and say something amazing, and he wasn’t even reading his book and he had it upside down. And I was really horrified at how selfish and awful he was, and how emotionless he was and that kind of reminded me a little bit about somebody else behind this song.

--------------------------------------------------

This obviously had something to do with her personal life, losing someone. Seeing as she wasn't alive during the Holocaust, that's not when it happened, so this song is therefore not about the Holocaust. It's a love song, how can you not see that.

Best Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/10

This song reminds me of these 2 twin sisters (In real life) that i really like. and i picture them in my mind dancing to this song...o god they are so beautiful....i love them but i never have the courage to ask them out. This song is the best.

Divorce ? | Reviewer: ladynae_ctygrl@yahoo.com | 11/28/10

I think this song is about a woman being divorced and her shock and sadness at the realization that she is abandoned. For example : . The dust has only just begun to form crop circles in the carpet ; furniture in their home that was removed because the husband packed up and left. 'Sinking feeling' and 'spin me round again and rub my eyes , this can't be happening' : she is filled with sadness and disbelief. 'Hide and seek , trains and sewing machines , all those years , the were here first : trains as in the train of her wedding gown which she made herself (sewing machines) and all the years they spent as a married couple her husband is throwing away. The Mmm watcha say part is pretty self explanatory , for the most part it really does sound like someone who is being broken up with. 'Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth , midsweet talk newspaper word cut outs' he is offering her consolation but she sees he doesn't truly mean them. It ends with ' speak no feeling no I don't believe you , you dont care a bit .... ' and there you have it. It is a remarkably beautiful song . I'm a black teen also so all my friends see me as the weird chick listening to music like this. I dont care , Imogen heap rocks :)

American Indians? | Reviewer: Yael | 11/17/10

I actually thought this song was about American Indians and how their land and culture was taken away by western european style culture. We were here first....ransom notes keep falling from your lips, like promised the US government made and broke to the Indians. Also at the end it sounds like she's talking about the US government making decisions about what to do about the "Indian problem", claiming to have their best interests in mind, like putting them on reservations, schooling the children in white schools, etc.

Actually, here are imogen Heap's own words about this song.

meaning of song is about affair and divorce | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/12/10

I think This song is based on a couple That has broken up because of an affair. What the hell is going on is both the cheater and partner finding out about the affair and what to do about it. Crop circles in the carpet is where the furniture once was in their happy home. Sinking feeling knowing This That its officially over. They were here first is the cheater saying to their lover that the family was there. Trains is toys meaning kids and sewing machines means wife at home doing a good job being a homemaker. Oily. marks are on the walls where memories of them photographs of family and happt moments..pleasure moments were hung before the takeover ..the breakup. The way the wall looks after a picture is hung for years leaving a stain on the wall..hide and seek.. hiding the secret and seeking out the truth the affair exposed ... newspaper word cutouts the mistress stalking wanting warning .. mid sweet words coming out of mouth ransom words means telling all the truths about affair and mixing in sweet words of please forgive the love is still there with the cheater that he is sorry ... You don't care a bit is stating u did this its your choice that this is where they are...faces not looking at him on the street. Disapproving of his affair family friends all disapproving now strangers

How Is It About the Holocaust? | Reviewer: AL | 11/11/10

There are some posts about this song being about the Holocaust and though I am not saying you are wrong, I am wondering, intensely, for how the song points *specifically* towards Jews and Nazis? Where in the song specifically denotes, resembles, reflects, alludes, and so on, to the Holocaust?

And if it is about genocide, why can it not apply to genocide occurring in other parts of the world?

And, further more, down to the main concept of the proposed analysis, where in the song does it point to genocide?

This is a poem. It is a beautiful work of art. Let's try to be a little bit more cautious about how we interpret these things, especially when we (or specifically Fraggle) says "That is the artist's own comment on the meaning of the song."

You actually have no idea that this is a comment by Imogen Heap on the Holocaust. Have you interviewed her?

Yes, dissect, pull apart, but do not add to the piece just because a few words sound vaguely like 11 million to 17 million people were murdered. Use what she writes down, research when she wrote it, email her and ask her, look at her usage of pronouns.

But do not, for the love of prose and poetry, change the essence of someone's creativity.

stupid people | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/6/10

ok the the anonymous reviewer titled hmm definitely stole that from "So You Think You Can Dance" the "Addicted" partner dance, wow dont copy something and than say it was your idea...... But anyways apart from stupid people, this song is amazing and so are all of the other Imogen Heap songs!!

Just For Clarification | Reviewer: Fraggle | 11/7/10

This song is about the Holocaust. Not the Holocaust-Era. The Holocaust. Dissect, pull apart, put your own meaning to it if you want to, but it's about the Holocaust. That is the artist's own comment on the meaning of the song.
How's that make you feel?

Wow | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/4/10

Listen to this high and it will change your views on life. Most emotional moment of my life. Seriously, this song is amazing sober, and when you add to that it is as if you are on a new level of existence.

Glossy eyes | Reviewer: Caroline | 11/4/10

I believe that the song Hide And Seek by Imogen Heap is truly amazing. I cry when I hear it. To me I think that it is about the holocaust. "They were here first" some people belive that the Jewish were on the earth first. "Hide and seek" which resebles the hidding people, and the nazis seeking them (HA HA! I DIDNT CAPITALIZE NAZIS! THEY DISERVE IT!) "Where are we, what the hell is going on?" I think that that resembles how some did not understand what was happening at first. "Spin me around again" It must have been so confusing for the Jewish people. "This can't be happening." The horrific scenes that took place must have been unbeleivable. i have a hard time even writing things like this.

hmm | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/4/10

I had never actually read the lyrics and had some of them wrong, but what it makes me think of is.. well I had a dance sort of thing in my head of it where there is a couple dating, and the boy pressures her into sex and then she wakes up and she is handcuffed to the boys hand.. he has control of her. Then I picture them moving in unison sort of like she's a puppet, when the "Whatcha Say" part starts, she breaks free and runs away and does a jump but he catches her, she can't let go of him yet because they went through so much together... anyway.. that's my take :)

There are no words to describe this work of art...it's like a poem with incredible flow and rhythm,it awakens your senses, your soul comes alive, your eyes see clearer. It's like falling in love or seeing a different side to things- you get that sudden feeling of deep thought just like when you look at your patner or crush..it is a dynamic song with incredible vocals, lyrics and rhythm.although my friends think I'm weird cuz I listen to such music as a black teen all I tell them is I know a something excellent when I hear it.so with a great poem comes a great poet.thank u im0gen heap :)

i believe its about the holocaust era. when people were working in sweat shops making clothing and the industrial revolution was happening with the railroads and everything. pretty epic if you ask me.
