It comes from a time when the Great Depression was not such a distant relative. I can remember when there were country singers who would get so worked up over a song, while they were performing, that they would sometimes express their great sadness by tearing and ripping their shirts off their bodies. Communicating such a feeling is not an easy task for the performer, yet Hank Williams was able to do it without tearing his shirt off. Mearly with his words and inflection in his voice that was a half yoldel he was able to create an atmosphere that anyone who heard him could understand and feel.
