The line, "so when the Smoke clears here I am" is referring how battles and wars create smoke and after it is over, when the Smoke clears, the person/people left standing are the victors for obvious reasons. Billie is saying that if you try to go to war against his music he will be the one who is still standing when the Smoke clears.

Hell of a good song. It really shows the attutude of Green Day and the attitude I admire. They are rerally genius. I just have one question. You all said you like the part "When the smoke clears here I am, your reject all-American". I don't quite get that part "when the smoke clears". What does it mean?
FUCK YES!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/22/11
This song is absolutely AWESOME!! I love the fact that he wrote this based on his response to a complaint letter that some bitchy mom took the time to write! That'll show her! It's just a great piece of work, and has some great lyrics, and sends a great message of FUCK OFF!!

I love this song because when this big arguament with this lass at our school started having a go at one of my friends-who happens to be a girl-my best friend and myself were just shouting lyrics like "who the hell are you to tell me", "what makes you think that it includes you" and "stop flattering yourself" at her.
Freaking awesome song and Green Days best album, doesnt get enough publicity and thats what makes it even better!!
Genius. | Reviewer: Lisa | 3/21/10
Only Billie Joe Armstrong could come up with an awesome song like this... not to mention from a complaint letter. I mean, this is awesome. Nimrod is an awesome album, and I highly recommend it.
P.S. I am in love with this song. The end is best, where Mike plays the bass like crazy. Plus, the line, "When the smoke clears, here I am" is genius. And I think this is where The All-American Rejects get their name from: "Your Reject All-American," which is also a genius line.

"Reject" came from an incident where a boy received Green Day's previous album, Insomniac for his eighth birthday from his grandma. The boy started singing Green Day's songs (with explicit lyrics), and his mother got angry and wrote a complaint letter to Armstrong; Armstrong wrote an actual letter back to her, and this song was based on his response.
this makes this song 50 times better
