One should look at this song as one of the final chapters in the story. If American Idiot is about a punk kid who gets bored of his town, and moves to the big city, but winds up dealing drugs in the shitty part of town, falling in love with some sort of underground rebel wannabe, and then being dumped and laughed at, then this song would be the result of that. He is fed up with being st. Jimmy in a city that doesnt care about him, and after being arrested (assumably for pot) at "the Facility on east 12th street", he goes straight back to his friends who are going crazy without him back in whatever his hometown was. hence homecoming.

wake me up when september ends not about a soldier, its about how billie joes dad died when he was 10 from cancer. i think this is a super unique song cuz they all sing a part of it, mike and tre wrote there parts separately, and this is the only song that they really sing a big part in a song.

i think this is more about what is happening to Jesus after Letter Bomb. he's kind of losing himself to society and grief because of her. (hence the "What the hell's your name..." etc)
also, the whole "get me out of here" part is about Jesus wanting his St. Jimmy personality back after having killed him off.
some parts of the song don't really fit in with my ideas though... (Rock and roll girlfriend... but i don't think that really fits in with the story at all.)
the point is, this has nothing to do with a soldier. the only song that has anything to do with a soldier is "When September Ends", which is about Billy's father dying.
not about a soldier | Reviewer: cdhbu | 3/24/09
this song isnt about a soldier at all .. it is about billy joe and what his life was like as the jesus of suburbia its a sequal the the jesus of suburbia track his alter ego is st jimmy, his commiting of suicide was not phisicaly it was 'metaphorical' he was getting rid of his alter ego the st jimmy who brought so much pain upon him..

Well, all I want to say is that, yes, this is a good song, but you've got to look at the general meaning of it. If you look around at the time in which this song was written, during the days when Bush was President, I'd say that this song is, more or less, about a soldier.
The whole album, I guess, is in one way or another a recollection of stories and memories about an imaginary soldier that was or "is in" the Iraqi war going on right now.
Like in this song, St. Jimmy could have been a fellow soldier.
In East 12th Street, either the soldier wanted to get out of war and move on to heaven but "Jesus is busy filling out paperwork" or he just wants to go home; "Get me the f*ck right out of here"
Nobody Likes You could have been a time before the soldier joined the Armed Forces, or maybe just those thoughts made him want to join the Army. Rock 'n' Roll Girlfriend could've been just that: the things he left at home, i.e. his girlfriend, his house, his car, his kid, etc. And of course, We're Coming Home Again is his long-awaited return home.
Just some thoughts. ^^ I know this was long, sorry bout that.
awesome songs!!! | Reviewer: Lauren | 5/30/08
I love how they always mention little parts from different songs e.g they mention the line 'dont wanna be an american idiot' in Homecoming and they mention Jimmy in a lot of songs, they mention Jesus of Suburbia in Letterbomb. :)
Sorry for going on and on!!
