It was only popular with the mainstream audiences because it latched onto the "Fuck America" bandwagon, which was extremely popular in the early 2000's. Green Day caught onto this, and thought "Hey, let's make a song that fits in with what society loves so much so that we can make millions of dollars!" and so they made a "Fuck America" song, and we all know everyone, even Americans, love "Fuck America". This isn't punk. This is selling-out at it's worse. Only little pre-teens that act like rebels but still cry home to their mummies and play on the basketball team and shit think this song is real punk. R.I.P Green Day.
