LIfe can be like Poker | Reviewer: Stipe | 2/3/13

I agree with Reviewer: mike | 4/14/10 review.

He is a loser since he lost many times, even with good cards. It is not not certain he will not lose "this time", despite his self assurance of "no chance of losing this time".

We blow opportunities in life.

Gambling in life is like the game itself. There is nothing honest about the game. There seems to be nothing honest in the jungle of life. Especially if we do not know when "get up and go".

Last fair deal in tho country
last fair deal in the town ....

Best regards from Croatia :)

Who's the queen? | Reviewer: Neal Stamell | 10/10/11

This loser, praying for an inside straight, needs his gall Suzie to back him $10 to play. I think "don't push me baby" is also aimed at her, or he'll take off, 'cause he's on his own.
He could be lookin' for the queen to complete his hand, or it could just be thrown in there on a whim, as another reference to a lady.

My thoughts are that the loser is trying to hit a queen of diamonds because it would give him the strait and would eliminate the chance of another player hitting a flush therefore he would have the highest possible strait since it isnt a paired bored there are no quad, or full house draws so he would have the proverbial Check Mark but as someone pointed out this is stud or draw poker so im not really sure but he really is a loser by sticking around on an inside strait draw, or just a degenerate gambler probly the latter

I liken this song to Mexicali Blues or Me and My Uncle. The Dead liked to play some wild West songs like that. Cowboys and horses, card, gambling and boozing.

They didn't play much hold 'em back then. Mostly it was stud games or draw.

The protagonist is a gambling addict/loser.

Holdin' low means he's on the come i.e., like Matty wrote, his hand is not complete and he wants to stick around for another round of bets but his hand can't take a large raise.

He's drawing to an inside straight which is a known loser play (typically). He's holding A-K-J-10 and he thinks he can read the top card has the Q that will complete his hand. (They didn't burn and turn in the game he's playing. This is why they burn and turn in today's game. So you can't get a read on the top card.)

Bobby does a great job singing the last line to let you know that yeah, sure enough, he loses.

ummmm...pretty sure they are (once again) comparing life to a game of cards....not literally playing a texas hold em game ya dummy! but how you can;t win at life if you do not how to play the "cards" life deals you

Mt thought is he is "holding low" meaning he has two low cards like a ten and jack suited diamonds looking for a flush or straight. "Don't you push me baby" means he doesn't want the opponent to raise the bet because its not a strong hand to bet on. A Queen of diamonds and another diamond are in the flop of three cards. (or he can tell the opponent has the queen by the way she smiles and he has a king or better that gives him the go ahead to play on) At this point he has better odds winning on a straight, flush or straight flush. The last "kicker" card completes his inside straight and if it is a royal straight-flush then he's got no chance of losing this time.

I love this song | Reviewer: Robby White | 3/5/10

At first I loved the Dead strictly for the music. Then I loved them for their performances. Now I am realizing how great their songwriting was too. This and others (Brown Eyed Women esp), are so well written you feel as if you understand a time in America's history in a way you never had before.

My question is, is "holdin' low" a reference to poker when sometimes the pot is divided among the best hand and the low spade for example, or perhaps he is alluding to his hand on his pistol?
