beautiful, but what meaning? | Reviewer: kaiding | 12/2/09

i agree with many of you on the beauty of the musical styles coming together, and how they act as an allegory for hong kong itself.

But what of the meaning in the lyrics? Some have mentioned lament, which I definitely understand, about the British presence and hand over. Though the British presence perhaps wasn't the best fit, then why fuse the two sounds like this?

In the last verse, i can't help but think of all the pop stars that have come from Hong Kong in recent decades. While they're hits in Asia for their catchy tunes and melodies, they never make it to the West because there's nothing musically astonishing about them. The West has its own catchy tunes, so why import some in a language that is much more incomprehensible than those from more nearby neighbors?

Perhaps this is the lament of substantial musical talent in HK? There aren't many star-level musicians who aren't "poppy". And most of them are pretty teeny-boppers (like in the west), have great voices, but just churn out hit singles for the masses. "[They] have well conditioned hair, they're beatiful, but there's nothing really there].

On the other hand, HK has a huge reputation for its music, which its hundreds of millions of fans can attest to, so who am I to make this claim? ...Just a thought.

Shades of Honk Kong Films and History | Reviewer: Dag | 8/31/09

This really is a brilliant song for a number of reasons... musicality, harmony, melody, lyrics, layering, singing, etc.

But I can't help getting the impression this was somehow partially inspired by the film Empire of the Sun (a very young Christian Bale's (13 years old) first movie). The opening line of the song, "Junk boats and English boys", immediately calls to mind that film. There is a malaise running through the song that also brings to mind the events of UK handing Hong Kong over to China. All in all, it sounds like a Brit's lament over everything that went wrong (and right to some degree) in that fable city of the Orient.

This song is absolute BRILLIANCE!
The first two minutes alone are good within themselves. And the sound of the song mixes fabulously with the title. Hong Kong, a city of fusion between East and West. Hong Kong, a song that collides sounds from worlds apart into perfect harmony.

This song is bliss

Beauty | Reviewer: Johnnie | 2/7/09

This is an absolute masterpiece. It focuses on amazing tear-jerking instrumentals along with powerful, moving, lyrics that practically touch the soul. You feel the very epic magnitude the song impacts upon you. It's beautiful and has marvelous vocals. An instant classic for the Gorillaz Hall of Fame
