The Reviews about All Those Years Ago (page 1/1)
------ performed by George Harrison

I have never been sure on how to take this song exactly. I'm not religous by any means but I do believe that the intent is there for whoever the song is dedicated to, be it Ringo, be it John. Damn cleverly constructed song regardless and can be quite the tear jerker when it wants to be.

God is love | Reviewer: Milo | 5/31/09

The whole point of the song is that love is the cure for what ails us, and that John was critized as being "weird" for having the courage to relay this message. Ironic isn't it? As for religious belief, I think that no matter where on the spectrum one's beliefs lie, the common denominator is love...

To all the comments. First of all, it's true that this song was first intended for Ringo and had different lyrics. Around that time John was murdered, so George decided to use this song as a tribute to him. It doesn't matter what the frist purpose of the melody was, nor does it mean that George didn't care for John. He just thought it fit to use this new tune to express his feelings and admiration for John after such atrocity happened. Second, John was an atheist meaning he didn't agree with the existing dogmas or the bureaucracy religion has always denoted. That doesn't mean he didn't believe in something else. You can pray for anything. Now, George was a religious person, and he truly believed in god. That's why he says:

They've forgotten all about God
He's the only reason we exist
Yet you were the one that they said was
so weird

Here he states that, according to his point of view, we all exist thanks to God but most people seem to have forgotten all about god. Yet, these same people were the ones who criticised John for not believeng in "that" God (example song "God"), although in practice they seem to have forgotten "him" tool.

Hope the explanation is clear!

I don't think this song was originally written "for" Ringo meaning as a tribute to him per se, but rather it was written for Ringo to record. I'm not sure if Lennon was truly an atheist. Twice in his song "Beautiful Boy" he says, "Before you go to sleep, say a little prayer." So I'm thinking he believed in some higher power.

Hmmmm, I'm not sure how to take this song as a tribute. It was originally penned with different lyrics as a song for Ringo, then John was killed, so I wonder how much of it was changed and what the original content was. Catchy tune, fishy lyrics.

wondering | Reviewer: Kyle | 8/20/07

wasnt lennon atheist? if so, why would harrison write that god is the only reason we exist? dont get me wrong, i LOVE the beatles, they were the most talented, and most profound musicians and songwriters ever.

No better tribute than this... | Reviewer: Josh | 5/2/07

Written by George when his "Big Brother" John was murdered. What a beautiful tribute to a fallen friend, hero, brother.

This song is more relevant today than when it was written. Can there be any doubt that we've "forgotten all about God"?
